While many Bills fans believe the focus of the off season should be fixing the defense, Steve Tasker thinks the team should invest on the offensive side of the ball. The former Buffalo Bill was a guest on the WGR morning show on Tuesday and after watching some explosive passing numbers go up this past season, his mindset was all about “Air Gailey”.
“It’s a copy cat league” said Tasker,” teams will decide why are we spending all that money on the defensive side of the ball. San Francisco did, great defense but couldn’t get in to the Super Bowl. The Baltimore Ravens have great defensive players and couldn’t get it done against a New England Patriots team that had a wide receiver playing corner. Its turned into an offensive league almost exaggerated. “
Tasker said the Bills should get another receiver or two and another offensive lineman or two and that those positions will be at a premium in this year’s draft. Tasker advocated the re-signing of free agent receiver Stevie Johnson and added the Bills need to bolster the number of weapons behind Johnson in the passing game, both at wide receiver and tight end.
““Teams winning the league every year are the ones throwing for almost five thousand yards , and they’ve got a lot of weapons on that side of the football and they’ve got an offensive line that can hold up pretty good so you better get that straightened out and get a team built along those lines.”
As far as the Bills quarterback situation, the Wall of Famer said he’s fine with Ryan Fitzpatrick for now. “I like Fitz. He can play, he can make all throws, makes the right decisions, gets the team lined up. I like his thought process, he’s a good leader, guys play hard for him, physically he can do it. I don’t think he was the problem despite what happened in the second half of the season.” Tasker acknowledged the Bills need better depth because as injuries piled up last season, it eroded the Bills ability to put up points.
Defense needs to be addressed, its the reason why we lost many of our games. We need pass rushers and CB's

No Defense?
I agree with Steve to a point-you do need to build on the offensive production from last year but you cannot just ignore the D. Yes the Pats got to the SB with no defense but the team that could rush the passer and actually play some D is the team that won. The Bills D was awful this year-they have to at least start to address that.

true, but not complety
what steve has said makes a lot of sense, but we still need a pass rush of some kind, cause if you noticed, brady wasn't so hot when the heat hot him. pas rush is still a need. we sucked last year. and it would only make a team more complete. just like the giants were.

I Agree with Tasker
The Organization had its "defensive chance'' last year in the draft and free agency. Now switch back to an "Offensive Chance". They have enough guys on the Defensive Ball and Young Players that Coaches need to whip into shape. Now lets get some Ballers, Tight Ends, Wide Recievers, Offensive Linemen.. Lets have an explosive offensive that we havent had ever. Please.

OVERRATED...
is how you spell Tasker backwards.

Packers, Saints, Lions
They all had great offenses That threw for 5,000 yards and didnt get in the super bowl either. The only teams that got in the superbowl were teams that got lucky because of bad mistakes by their opponent in the game before.

biased
Build up offense? That defense is horrific! This is totally biased coming from a former offensive player (that didn't even really contribute on offense). We should tell Steve to take his Ve Hic le and get on down the road or at least to shut his mouth and do something semi-productive for the next 3 months until football season rolles around!

"Get rid of thos preseason games."
I'm sorry, Mr. Tasker, but don't you make a partial income by doing preseason games for The Bills?
I hope by you making those comments, you get fired.

Readers comments.
If this is a cross section of WGR listeners then it is no wonder that the network can get away with having the worst talent and production in the business. These people are idiots and their comments are childlike.

Ask Green Bay
15 - 1 record with a weak defense, strong offense, league MVP QB and Green Bay is excused from the playoffs in their first game. Balance the defense with the offense. The Bills' defense improves most in a pass 1st league with an improved pass rushThen you will see the offense improve as a result of a better defense.

agreed
switching back to the 4-3 depth on d agreed a pass rusher is needed but offensive line wide out and tight end are the bigger needs right now, go after a pass rusher in F.A. but take care of the other needs!!

i dont like tasker:
perhaps its because i see him constantly on those automobile commercials. i would never buy a car from them.
02/08/2012 3:47AM
way off homie!
come on Tasker this defense is horrible and if you are spending all game on defense your offense wont be on the field anyways..you are talking a Super Star quarterback with Brady and if you dont have one you better be talking defense. We need a pass rusher im sick of watching so many yards being given up each game

Volume Off
That's the way I watch Bills games when Tasker's involved. Have you ever counted how many times he says the word "guy"? It's at least 4 times a sentence. Why is he propped up as some kind of Buffalo hero? I really don't care for his television persona.

I would like him better
if he did broadcasts with masking tape over his mouth.

The field
Every change is a double-edged sword. Realistically, if the offense is on the field more and they culminate with long drives with a touchdown at the end, then yes go taht way. The defense should automatically be better becasue they get 1: rest and 2: hopefully a team pinned in their own end rather than their backs against the ropes.
The offense does lack star power, especially at WR. Steve Johnson cannot do it all as I do not see him as a true #1. Nelson is a #3 at best and one of the most consistent WR on the roster, Roosevelt, never plays.
Our defense needs a big time player at corner and someone that can put pressure on the opposing QB, but otherwise they are build very well. I think with a new DC and the 4-3 they will be much better.

Guy's outta his mind
He really thinks you just give up on defense because you drafted for it last year! Gotta be kidding me. They need to do something to that defense or they'll just have every team score at will. The offense can win you some games and consistently put up a solid 20-30 pts if they're healthy. Need the D to be built up and keep us in games and not track meets.

Is this a sports town?
They say Buffalo fans know their sports. Based on these comments I have to say that couldn't be farther from the truth.
What's with all the Tasker hate? This city is filled with a bunch of ignorant losers who have nothing better to do than whine and moan about everything. With fans like this Buffalo doesn't deserve a championship.
