Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550) -- The Bills practiced in the rain in Orchard Park on Monday with many players sitting out the workout. Andy Levitre took snaps at LT with the first-team offense. Chan Gailey said, "As I've said every time we talk about the offensive line, my job is to get the five best on the field. And maybe that our five best is playing Chad Rinehart at guard and Andy Levitre at tackle. We're going to take a look at it. That's our responsibility to take a look at it. Levitre is doing an excellent job. He's a versatile player and he's played it before. We'll see how it goes."
The question is, how long is this experiment for is, "I think it depends on them. It depends on both Levitre and Demetrius how long we go with it or whether it becomes permanent or whether it becomes just something we tried for a little while."
This is happening because Demetrius Bell has struggled this preseason. It's not ideal, but Gailey didn't want to sit still, "You'd rather not. You'd rather not look at those options at this time, but you have to. You sometimes don't get to do it exactly by the book. It's kind of like the quarterback last year. We didn't get to do it like how we wanted to. You have to be smart and use all of the things to make good decisions. That's what we hope we're doing this time."
Bell had a horrible time containing Denver's pass rushers on Saturday. Gailey said, "Consistency, that's the bottom line. You have to be consistent up front. You don't have to be great or perfect but you have to be consistent. We've got to make sure we get the guys that can be consistent for us up there."
After suffering a scary injury in the exhibition loss to Denver, WR Donald Jones missed practice. RB Johnny White who also left the Broncos game was missing as well. The other players not practicing on Monday were Terrence McGee, Corey McIntyre, Arthur Moats, Reggie Torbor, Kellen Heard, Scott Chandler, Craig Davis, Shawn Nelson, Chris Kelsay and Chris White.
Shawne Merriman was on the field. He was limited. He missed the loss to Denver to rest a leg injury.
Gailey commented on many of the injuries. Here's the rundown from the Bills transcript:
On RB Johnny White and WR Donald Jones injuries:
They're both going to be back for the first ball game as I understand it.
Johnny will probably be back a little quicker than Donald. I think they'll both
make the first ball game.
On WR Naaman Roosevelt:
Naaman got that ankle rolled up. It's going to be a couple of weeks for him.
On WR David Nelson leaving practice early:
He tightened up a little bit but he came back out and finished.
On LB Chris Kelsay:
Kelsay had a little procedure done and you can ask him about it if you want to.
He's going to be fine. It's going to take two-to-three days to heal but he will
be fine.
On CB Terrence McGee:
He pulled something in the ball game. It's not major. I think he'll be back in
a day or two.
The Raiders took Terrelle Pryor in the NFL's supplemental draft in the 3rd round. Here's more from the transcript and the Bills interest:
On if the team had interest in Terrelle Pryor:
We talked about it, just like we talk about every guy. Buddy and I talked about
it and we felt like it was in our best interest not to pull the trigger too high
of a level.
On if the team put in a bid for Pryor:
You don't get to talk about those things. I don't get to.
On if some of the reasoning for not taking Pryor was because of having Brad
Smith already:
Yes, sure it is. You already have that kind of player and that kind of athlete.
We feel very good about where we are there.
