The Philadelphia Wings used a six-goal fourth quarter rally to defeat the Buffalo Bandits 13-10 to hand the Bandits their first loss of the season.
The Bandits held a 9-7 lead going into the fourth quarter after keeping the Wings off the scoreboard for all of the third. Philadelphia then scored twice to tie the game 9-9 early in the quarter before Mark Steenhuis put Buffalo ahead one final time. The Wings responded with four-straight goals to take the lead back for good.
“We gave them way too many good opportunities,” said Bandits head coach Darris Kilgour, “at the same time we were right there at the end, we got no one to blame but ourselves.”
Buffalo did have its chances to take control of the game during a closely played first half. The Bandits had a pair of five minute power plays but only managed to score three goals with the extended man advantage.
“We should’ve been up by three, four goals in the first half,” Kilgour said, “it might have been a different game but we didn’t capitalize on our opportunities.”
Drew Westervelt had a game-high four goals for Philadelphia including the game winner. Brendan Mundorf scored a hat trick to go along with four assists. Dan Dawson led all players with eight points including seven assists.
The Bandits got a pair of goals each from Mark Steenhuis, John Tavares, Luke Wiles and Chad Culp. Mike Thompson surrendered 12 goals on 42 shots with the final Philadelphia goal coming with an empty net.
Buffalo falls to 2-1 after playing all three of their Eastern Division foes to begin the season. They will face those teams two more times each this year. The Bandits will have little time to dwell on the loss as they head to Minnesota on Saturday to play the Swarm.
It was fun winning while it lasted. Back to normal in suck mode like the rest of our sports teams blowing leads sitting back. Who was in goal? Miller? Is there a curse on the First Niagara Center or at the Ralph. We all suck at home.
