Amherst, NY (WGR 550) -- While the rumors continue to circulate about the coaching future of UB football coach Turner Gill, the Bulls coach was honored today by the Mid-American Conference, being named the MAC Coach of the Year just days after capping the season with an overtime win at Kent State.
Gill guided the Bulls to an East Division co-championship with a 4-2 division record and 5-3 overall MAC record, the best season in the I-A (Football Championship Subdivision) history for the school. Gill inherited a program two years ago that had won just seven total conference games as a MAC member from 1999-2005.
Gill's name continues to be a hot topic for the vacant Nebraska job, left by fired coach Bill Callahan. Nebraska interim A.D. Tom Osborne said Saturday after announcing the firing of Callahan that he wished to speak with four or five coaches. Gill was believed to have spoken to Osborne on Monday.
Eight other UB players also earned honors as they were named to the All-MAC team. Freshman safety Davonte Shannon was named to the first team, while center Jamey Richard, running back James Starks and defensive end Trevor Scott were named to the 2nd team. 3rd team All-MAC players were guard Jeff Niedermier, receiver Naaman Roosevelt and linebackers Kareem Byrom and Larry Hutchinson.
