Amherst, NY (WGR 550) -- Turner Gill addressed the media Tuesday at UB Stadium to put a wrap on the 2007 season, the best in the school's Division I history. After winning MAC Coach of the Year honors, Gill was in the national spotlight over the past weeks in regards to his candidancy to possibly replace Bill Callahan at Nebraska. The Huskers announced Sunday that LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini will be the next coach, leaving Gill at UB for now.
Gill felt honored to be considered for the vacant position at Nebraska, but he's happy to be at UB. "Most people would think it would be a great fit for me to be at Nebraska but just wasn't meant to be at this time. The fit here at Buffalo however has turned out very well. I'm not a coach who likes to jump around from job to job. I will never say never, but there are a only a handful of schools that I would ever leave the University of Buffalo for." Gill said he has been contacted by other schools but has not interviewed for any other coaching positions.
Gill also said that there is a two-year contract extension that he and Athletics Director Warde Manuel are working on, but the details are not totally final at this moment. He anticipates the rest of the coaching staff will return.
Gill feels the perception of the school has changed and he notices the most change when recruiting. Gill said recruiting will try to focus on the defensive line and at linebacker. The team only loses 4 starters overall. Jamey Richard(center) is the lone senior starter on offense that will not return. On defense, Trevor Scott (DE), Kareem Byrom (LB) and Larry Hutchinson (LB) also will not be back due to their senior status.
Gill also addressed next year's schedule, which will now feature 6 home games and 6 road games; as opposed to the unbalanced look of previous seasons. Gill said that the non-conference slate will most likely include home games with UTEP and Army and road games at Pittsburgh and Missouri.
