Source: Stevie Johnson's Asking Price to Bills: $7.5 Mill

Orchard Park, NY -- As the end of the season draws near for the Buffalo Bills, it could also mark the end of tenure for a high-profile player currently presiding on their roster.

Wide receiver Stevie Johnson is an unrestricted free agent as of 4 pm on March 13, the official start of the 2012 free agency period as announced by the NFL.

A source close to the situation told WGR's Joe Buscaglia that Stevie Johnson's asking price placed in to the Buffalo Bills during negotiations was an annual salary of $7.5 million. The source indicates that there have been no contract offers issued to Johnson from the Bills over the course of the past month.

The source also said that the Bills did not mention the idea of a franchise tag for the wide receiver at any point while the negotiations were still going on, or even since they have subsided.

In September, WGR Sports Radio 550 reported the two sides were $2 million per year apart when they were exchanging contract proposals at the beginning of the season.

When asked for comment by Buscaglia, a spokesperson of the Bills would not comment, citing the team's policy of not making statements concerning contracts and their subsequent negotiations.

C.J. Laboy of Octagon Football, who represents Johnson, spoke with WGR's Sal Capaccio about the breakdown of talks between the two sides.

"We were approached to do a deal prior to the season starting," said Laboy. "When it became clear that the two sides were too far apart, we agreed that it would be best to shelve negotiations and allow Stevie to focus on the season.  Stevie never wanted his contract status to be a distraction to him or his teammates.  At that time, the Bills turned their focus on getting Ryan [Fitzpatrick]’s contract done, which they ultimately did.  A week or so after Ryan’s deal was done, the Bills wanted to re-open negotiations, but when it quickly became apparent that we wouldn’t be able to get a deal done, Stevie decided that it was best to wait until the end of the year before talking about his contract again."

Since talks have broken off, and the closer Johnson has moved towards free agency, a lot of speculation has been made about exactly how much money Johnson is seeking to remain in Buffalo.  Some have pegged the number to be upwards of $8 million and even up to $10 million.  Laboy flatly denies that.

"Stevie was more than willing to do a discounted deal with the Bills because of his loyalty to the organization for giving him his chance in the NFL, his loyalty to his teammates, and his love for the city of Buffalo.  Any reports of Stevie asking for 10, 9, or even 8 million dollars a year are completely false and misleading," said Laboy.

While Laboy would not divulge specific dollar amounts, a league source to Capaccio corroborates with Buscaglia's source that the Johnson camp proposals "never exceeded anything in the sevens (millions)."

That source tells Capaccio the deals the two sides had discussed were all spanning "four or five years."

Johnson is on the cusp of being the first Bills' receiver in franchise history to post back-to-back seasons that gain 1,000 receiving yards. He is just 36 yards away from the mark. Johnson is three receptions shy of being just the second Bills player to post 75 catches in consecutive seasons as well. Eric Moulds is the only other Bills player to do so.

Week 16 against the Broncos, Johnson became only the third Bills receiver to catch 70 passes in back-to-back seasons. Moulds and Andre Reed also have accomplished the feat.

On Wednesday, Johnson maintained hope that he would be back, despite the lack of recent negotiations. Since day one, he's maintained that he wants to be with the Buffalo Bills for many years to come.

"Yeah, most definitely. I do want to be here," he said. "I'm still very optimistic that I will be here in Buffalo even if I was to test out free agency and all that. What brings me back here is because of the guys with like Fitz, with coach Gailey."

Johnson continued:

"I think we've got a good core here. We went on a losing streak and everything, but I think we've got a good core here and I think we can only get better."

Laboy echoed his clients' comments.

"If you know Stevie, you know that he is one of the most passionate and vocal supporters of the Bills organization," he said.  "He genuinely believes that the organization is heading in the right direction and with Coach Gailey at the helm and Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback that not only is Buffalo a great place to play, but that they can and will return to the glory years of the early 90s.  Stevie believes he can be a big factor in the Bills return to glory."

Laboy declined comment when asked if they would still consider a discount, due to both sides not speaking about a new deal in over a month. Johnson's agent went on to say, however, that his client is still willing to make a deal with the Bills before he hits the open-market in free agency.

A separate agent that has a client on the Bills roster told Capaccio that he never directly dealt with General Manager Buddy Nix when it came to his client's contract. In fact, he said he dealt 100-percent with Jim Overdorf and that Nix "never involved himself in the negotiations."  The level of Overdorf's involvement was also confirmed by another agent who used to have a client on the Bills roster prior to Nix taking over GM duties. "Jim has been their primary negotiator for as long as I have known," said the agent, speaking on condition of anonymity.

This is not unique in the NFL.  Some General Managers prefer to deal only with the personnel side of the business, then along with ownership and the budget they are given, give directives to someone else in the front office, who then handles the monetary side of contract negotiations.

Laboy declined to comment on who in the Bills organization is handling the negotiations with him regarding Johnson's contract.

However, each one of these agents, including Laboy, did point out that the Bills have been very professional and all three had a lot of praise for the organization when speaking about dealing with them and their clients' negotiations.  The two agents who have dealt with Overdorf specifically mentioned the terrific job they feel he does and his level of professionalism whenever they've dealt with him.

Johnson has 72 catches for 964 yards and six touchdowns in 2011. He made a base salary of $550,000 on the final year of his four-year rookie contract as a former seventh round pick.

Bills
If the Bills don't re-sign this guy, they're even more hopeless than I thought. He's a very good player and this is a team with too many holes to create another.
12/29/2011 5:34PM
7.5
He may be good but not 7.5Mil a year good he can be replaced. Nobody is gonna pay this guy that amount of money.
12/29/2011 5:44PM
7.5 is reasonable
pay that man his money
12/29/2011 5:54PM
So What!
Get rid of this showboater and pass dropper. He is like a Ryan Miller when the game is on the line. (Average)
12/29/2011 6:23PM
Sign Him
The guy isn't asking a ton. Pay him and Fred. They are one of the few guys on this team that are talented. Also, its not like the Bills are in cap trouble or Ralph is broke. No excuses, you must sign both, period. I'm scared they won't though.
12/29/2011 6:28PM
Seriously??
How many players actually come right out and say they want to stay in Buffalo?!?! Especially a player the caliber of Stevie, the guy loves the Bills and there fans and wants to be here. Usually players are counting down the days to get out of Buffalo. IfI were Buddy Nix I would jump on the 7.5 million a year because someone is going to want to over pay for this guy.
12/29/2011 6:44PM
ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!
THEY PAID DERRICK DOCKERY 7 MILLION A YEAR in 2007!!!!
12/29/2011 7:12PM
He'll get the deal done here
All the turds forget that the rookie wage scale helps vets. In turn the 5 mil you feel stevie deserves or "that's all he's worth" really is 7 mil now. Don't be cheap, he will be resigned.
12/29/2011 7:35PM
He'd be worth the $ if he didn't blow so many plays!
Stevie, you got the moves and quickness to get open on Revis but you drop the ball a lot. That's all I can say, Stevie. Subtract the drops and your salary belongs at $4 million.
12/29/2011 9:22PM
wake up people
ralph runs this team lean and as a business his #1 goal is keeping costs low and lean so that it has the most value for a buyer. He cant live for ever. This team spends so far under the cap its a joke.
12/29/2011 9:34PM
Why is this even an issue for the Bills?
Just pay the man! He wants to stay in Buffalo and is asking for fair market value. Other teams will be willing to overpay for his services, and they will if given the chance. This should've been resolved weeks ago. Enough nickel and diming and ink it already.
12/29/2011 10:01PM
Time to stop the perpetual "rebuilding" process and show results in 2012!
Sign him and Jackson now! The Bills front office needs to show that they understand that "rebuilding" does have an end game. The loyal fans of this team have waited way too long. Concentrate on upgrading the defense and maybe another WR to complement Johnson in draft / FA and bring rest of the pieces together in 2012.
12/29/2011 10:06PM
hahhahahaha they wont sign him even though they signed evans for 9 million
lol the title pretty much explains what the bills are gonna do, probably won't sign fred jackson...mr 30 mill under the cap wilson is too cheap
12/29/2011 10:39PM
That is lower than what he'd get in FA
So they should take the home town discount and stop creating new holes in the lineup because they have been too cheap to kepp decent guys for reasonable money
12/29/2011 10:56PM
Don't sign him
He's too good of a player to have his career rot in this awful city.
12/29/2011 11:35PM
Buddy is just a scout
He doesn't manage anything; certainly not $$. When will Bills' fans figure it out?
12/29/2011 11:36PM
Pay up
They need to sign Stevie due to his passion for the game and the city. He is very unselfish and would teach the young guys the ropes. Keep Stevie over Fitz any day
12/30/2011 12:30AM
That's all????
If this is true then it is peanuts and @7.5 you must be kidding that's small potatoes to teams that want to win and spend the cash. If the Bills don't sign him and he walks, his name will be on a contract within 30 minutes...mark my words!
12/30/2011 11:30AM
Pay him
The last person I saw with a yac average that was so high, for the bills, was Andre Reed. Hes 25, only gonna get any better. If the Bills don't resign him, I am done watching them be cheap year after year. I suggest you all do the same.
12/30/2011 12:03PM
Bills make me sick
The Bills may end up signing Stevie but will no doubt leave him and the rest of the league a foul taste in their mouths about the Bills constant desire to "cheap out" on their own players and new ones that might arrive. As aten year season ticket holder I give up....Bought my 6 and 4 year old boys Green Bay Jerseys for Christmas, this I'm afraid will be Ralphs legacy.
12/30/2011 1:53PM
Not unreasonable
5yrs/ 36 mil or 6yrs /43 mil or so is pretty reasonable for a #1 receiver in today's NFL market. Instead of constantly subtracting good players, it would be nice if they would actually build on their core and not deplete it year after year.
12/30/2011 2:06PM
If they dont sign him
What are they going to accomplish by not signing him? It's not like we have the Eagles roster draining gazillions of dollars. If they don't sign him I'm done with this team, it's been over a decade since we've been to the playoffs and not retaining Stevie is not going to help remedy any of the Bills problems... The only other decent receiver on the squad is David Nelson, and he's def not a #1 WR. There is also nobody out there better/younger than Johnson that is worth paying whatever insane amount of money they will want to play for the Bills. This guy loves the team, wants to be here, is young, is a decent WR... KEEP HIM. There is plenty of other holes that need to be dealt with in the Bills roster without having Stevie a free agent...
12/30/2011 2:10PM
Get rid of him and add WHO?
Who do the Bills have on offense that is such a potent weapon at the wide out position that we can afford to just get rid of Stevie Johnson???? Nelson? Roosevelt? Easley? Please stop drinking your haterade because Steve has some personality and isn't a conservative robot. We need this guy on our team bottom line! Who is our recievers going to be next year if he is gone? Who is going to pick up the playbook and the chemistry with Fitz that has been developed with Stevie already? Nobody... I swear some fans just want the Bills to be perpetual losers and "rebuilders" FYI you dont build a solid structure by removing the bricks you've already laid...
12/30/2011 3:18PM
No More Games
I used to go to several Bills games a year. I drove from Toronto and loved seing games in Buffalo. It was a long day but worth it. The losses year after year made the drive seem longer and longer. It has been two years in a row that I have not gone to a game and no longer spend money on jerseys, etc. Start by paying Stevie and then I will come to the games and pay you Ralph! Why spend money on guys like Kelsey, Thygpen, Smith and then risk losing Fitz's key receiver? These are the things that furiate me. Is he worth $7 ... who really knows. If we lose him then we need 2 receivers, 2 olb and help on the ol and cb....tooooooo many positions to fill. THE FANS DESERVE FOR OUR TEAM TO GET TO THE PLAYOFFS AND IF YOU NEED TO OVERPAY A COUPLES GUYS DOOOO ITTTTT!
12/30/2011 4:43PM
Nate Clemens, Pat Williams, Taykeo Spikes... should I continue
People are acting like an 80 catch 1100 yrd reciever is easy to find, remember stevie and fitzpatrick have been together for 3 yrs now, unless colston falls in our lap, sign stevie for the 7.5 and stop this 12 year rebuild process because brad smith, marcus easily/ or david nelson can match his production and we cant waste a 2nd or 3rd yrd pick just to save 5 mil a year.
12/30/2011 5:05PM
who was it...
...Oh ya i remember the person that said they wanted to stay in Buffalo...Drury, and he screwed us over
12/30/2011 5:50PM
everyone sayin hes drops the ball..!
He has 4 recored drops all year ...that less then brandon Marshall calvin johnson an he is tied with jennings so...do your hw before u make dumb statements
12/30/2011 5:59PM
Keep Stevie in Buffalo
stevie johnson is on his way to being a top 10, mb top 5 wideout in the nfl...this players route running is sick...like no one else in the game...let stevie johnson walk i may walk away from my season tickets...commitment to winning is what i want from the bills...not donald jones as the number 1 receiver...keep stevie in buffalo for the next 5 or 6 years...pleaseee ralph.
12/30/2011 7:14PM
Dumbest franchise in Pro Sports
Nothing that the morons at One Bills Drive could do would surprise anyone. They constantly let good players walk and then sign stiffs in free agency like Dockery and Langston Walker. Their drafting proficiency is an absolute joke. Hollywood couldn't make up the draft decisions over the past 10 years. Shrewd moves like: Whitner instead of Nada, Maybin instead of Matthews, Spiller when they had Lynch & Jackson on roster and Raji was sitting there. Now the geniuses will let Johnson walk and replace with him a draft pick or some stiff like Jones. Until Wilson passes on I am afraid Bills fans are stuck with a billion dollar franchise run by idiots.
12/30/2011 7:31PM
Pathetic franchise
As long as Wilson is alive we are stuck with moronic leadership at One Bills Drive. We as Bills fans expect horrible draft picks, stupid decisions, recycled coaches, pathetic scouts and no playoffs. Hollywood couldn't make up the bungling that these morons have done over the past 50 plus years. The only time our "HOF" owner ever won was when he had Lou Saban or Bill Polian in charge. The other teams must look at the Bills as a comedy troupe at draft time. Of course the shrewd decisions to pick Whitner over Nada, Maybin over Matthews and Spiller when they already invested the 12th pick on Lynch and had Jackson here and the 10th pick on a McKelvin were status quo in Bills country. Now the idiots will let Johnson walk and replace him with a stiff like Donald Jones. All we can do is wait for an ownership change and know that we are powerless to the idiotic leadership of this pathetic franchise.
12/30/2011 10:14PM
No Way
He drops passes when we need them the most. He is incapable of making the "big play." He has never led this team to a win. In my opinion, he's a good #2 at best. Time to move on and get a real #1.
12/30/2011 11:39PM
Pay the man.
Seriously. Make a statement. Losman had one great weapon: deep to Evans. Look at Atlanta and Ryan & White. Excellent combo, but White dropped wide open passes his first couple of seasons. Not anymore. Don't take away Fitzpatrick's main target. If the Bills are as invested in Fitz as they're making us believe, they cannot let Stevie Johnson go.
12/31/2011 9:03AM
Bills Fan
I'm a die hard but if they don't pay Stevie and let him walk after what he's shown he can do even against Revis, I swear I will never watch another Bills game again. I'm so sick of this organization treating the best fan base I'm the junk NFL like messand I can't wait until someone buys this team and I pray they actually will care even an ounce about us because that's far more than what our current regime cares about this team
12/31/2011 11:20AM
BILLBOARD?
Who is the guy who got the billboard up a few years ago regarding Juron, Modrack etc? Can you spearhead another campaign letting Ralph know we can't take it anymore. We need to preesure him personally to shell out cash and get elite free agents players in asap. If we had better scouts then rebuilding through the draft is a great idea...unfortunately we don't!
01/01/2012 3:57PM
Off He Goes
Sure, he makes great catches....and even scores touchdowns. But I ask what value is it that this knucklehead can't stop his stupid antics (after scoring touchdowns) which costs the team 15 yards AND momentum. Way to put the Pats in great scoring position after your touchdown Stevie and give them confidence. He's a talented showboat who has demonstrated time and again he can't catch the "big one." Off he goes....
01/02/2012 5:45PM
Sign him
$7.5 million minus $250,000 for every dropped pass and unsportmanlike penalty.
01/02/2012 8:12PM
keep stevie
The bills try to go the inexpensive route on players and look what happens. In order to win, get the media in buffalo, create the hype (because hype sells, hotel rooms, bills jerseys etc, tickets) is reason for paying the money for good players.
01/03/2012 2:38PM
Pay Him
He is worth the money. If not him than who we got really. Nelson is a decent option but his not no 1. Jus pay the man & sign V. Jackson then we got 2 legit weapons for that back up u paid 60 mill.
