Soundtrack of Summer

bulldog@wgr550.com

Summertime is in full swing and that can mean any number of things.  For me, I constantly find myself thinking about how much harder I can work and continuing to give my all.  Ok, that is a lie.  At this time of the year I think many of us are thinking about vacations, weekends and making sure we get the most out of each minute of our valuable time away.

Whether I am sitting by the lake or driving across the country on a family road trip, music is the soundtrack of my summer.  More than any other time of the year, summer is the time I need the music to be just right.  So with that in mind, I decided to share with you the music that is dominating my cd player and I-pod.

Drive By Truckers, Brighter Than Creation's Dark.  This one came out in January but has easily made the transition to the warm weather.  DBT's first effort following the departure of guitarist/songwriter Jason Isbell finds the band stretching out a bit with the addition of John Neff's pedal steel.  Summed up, this band rocks too hard for country radio and is too country for rock radio.  So go to their website or myspace page and see if you dig it.

Marah.  This band has had a place in my heart ever since they performed live in the WGR studios in the summer of 2000.  You can hear songs of their latest effort, Angels of Destruction at www.myspace.com/marahusa but my favorite is Kids in Philly from 2000.  Walked into Mohawk Place to see them on that tour and was sure I was seeing the next great rock band in America.  You don't want to take my word for it, try this.  Springsteen loves 'em.

Ryan Bingham,  Mescalito.  This is the newest add to my rotation and I have my wife to thank.  She found out about him and dvr'd his appearance on Conan back in May.  He and his band positively smoked a version of 'Bread and Water' .  His voice sounds like it has been soaking in a barrel of bourbon and he writes good to great songs.  I don't know much more about him but judging by the sound of his record, he is likely in that sort of radio netherworld I mentioned regarding DBT.  You can hear the studio version of 'Bread and Water' as well as a few others at www.myspace.com/ryanbingham .

Jason Isbell, Sirens of the Ditch.  The departed Trucker is a fantastic songwriter, singer, and guitarist.  Pretty good triple play.  Funny thing is, I love his solo debut and like DBT better without him.  More soulful than his work with DBT,  this record has been out about a year now but is still getting regular spins at our house.  You can check out a couple of his best songs from his days with DBT as well selections from the solo record at www.myspace.com/jasonisbellmusic .

So there are a few to sink your teeth into.  Ideally the way I would like this to work is that you can check some of this stuff out for yourself and offer me your thoughts on any of it, as well as some of your favorites that I may not know about.
