Getting to know Drew

Simon: Inside The Numbers

Here’s an Inside the Numbers I never thought I would do.  For those of you who were wondering exactly who is Drew MacIntyre, I am going to tell you all about him. I figured you might be curious since he made his Sabres debut this past Wednesday against New Jersey.  First off he is the Sabres backup goalie while Ryan Miller is sidelined by concussion.  When Miller returns, MacIntyre will return to his job with the Rochester Americans.

MacIntyre is in his first season with the Sabres organization but its his 9th year in professional hockey.  A native of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, he was originally drafted  by the Detroit Red Wings in the 4th round in 2001 after a successful junior career in the Quebec Major Junior League.  He never made it to Detroit, instead spending three seasons splitting time between the Red Wings American Hockey League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins and the Toledo Storm of the ECHL.

In 2006, MacIntyre signed with Vancouver and played for the Manitoba Moose, again in the AHL.  The call he was waiting for came on December 11, 2007 when Roberto Luongo was sidelined by injury.  MacIntyre came up to the NHL to backup Curtis Sanford but ended up coming on in relief in 2 games.  That was it for his NHL stat line until Wednesday but MacIntyre still has not started an NHL game.  He probably won’t with Jhonas Enroth firmly entrenched during Miller’s absence.

All in all, MacIntyre has played in 4 different leagues and 8 different cities when you add Rochester and Buffalo to his resume. The Sabres are his 6th organization after being property of Detroit, Vancouver, Nashville, Atlanta and Monteal.  It seemed like a fairly non- descript career until I read that MacIntyre once scored a goal.  I thought that would be an interesting story for this piece but it wasn’t a real goal.  It happened in an AHL game and the team he was playing against pulled their goalie on a delayed penalty and an errant pass went back into their own net.  MacIntyre was the last player on his team to touch the puck so he technically became the 9th goalie in AHL history to score a goal.
