Sabres Sign Gerbe

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550)-The Buffalo Sabres have signed prospect Nathan Gerbe. It's a three year deal worth 2.55-million dollars.

Gerbe helped Boston College win the NCAA Championship over Notre Dame this season. The junior was the runner-up for the Hobey Baker award for best collegiate player. Gerbe had five goals and three assists in the Frozen Four.

Gerbe is listed as 5-foot-5 and 165 lbs. He was the Sabres 5th round draft pick in 2005 and will skip his senior season with the Eagles.

Gerbe said, "I think this was a great oppurtunity for myself to further my career in hockey. It would be great going back to school and finishing up my degree and that's something I'm still going to pursue."

Sabres G.M. Darcy Regier had great things to say about Gerbe's competitive fire, "I can remember watching him in his draft year and, at that time, he was probably more about energy. What we've seen is the energy has been focused into specific skills, his ability to score, his ability to make plays. He knows who he is."

Gerbe is no longer practicing with Team USA at the World Championships.

Regier said he will continue talks with Tim Kennedy's advisor within the next day or two. Kennedy was Washington's 6th round pick in 2006. The Sabres acquired the rights to the Western New York native.

Regier is also in talks with 2006 2nd round pick goaltender Jhonas Enroth and number four pick center Felix Schutz. Regier says it's not known if there's a June 1st deadline or they go back into the draft because there's no agreement in place between the NHL and the IIHF.
