Kanata, ONT (WGR 550) -- Derek Roy picked up two assists and scored the winning goal in the shootout as the Buffalo Sabres rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Thursday. The win earned Buffalo a much-needed two points, yet failed to gain any ground in the standings on either the Bruins or Capitals, as both teams were also Thursday night winners.
The Sens appeared to carry some momentum from Tuesday's come-from-behind win over Buffalo when Jason Spezza gave Ottawa the 1-0 lead just 7:35 into the game when he tucked the puck between Ryan Miller's pads. The Sabres responded quickly, however. Just 55 seconds later, Max Afinogenov found the back of the net to tie things up, and Jochen Hecht's 22nd goal of the season about four minutes after that put Buffalo up by a goal heading into the second period.
Ottawa regained the lead on the strength of two straight Mike Fisher goals, the first of which came at 4:17 of the second and the other coming just 3:58 into the third. Still down by one late in the game, Paul Gaustad came through with the equalizer for Buffalo to send the game to overtime. After a scoreless extra frame, the Sabres picked up a rare shootout victory thanks to goals by Jason Pominville and Roy. Miller, who stopped 25 shots prior to the shootout, came through with big saves on Antoine Vermette and Daniel Alfredsson.
Buffalo now has 83 points, but is still five back of both Boston and Philadelphia; each have 88 points. Washington has 86 points, but the Capitals have played one more game than the Sabres. They're right back at it tomorrow, at home against Montreal. It'll be a 7:30 faceoff from the HSBC Arena. Mike Schopp and the Bulldog will get pregame started at 6:30 on WGR SportsRadio 550.
