Buffalo, NY -- The Buffalo Sabres have had to deal with their fair share of injuries this season to their players, and now they can add their head coach to that list.
During Monday's practice, Lindy Ruff was skating backwards towards an area where Jordan Leopold had been taken down and was sliding across the ice. Ruff was accidentally leg-swept by Leopold approximately 30-feet from the goal and hit the playing surface with a huge thud.
Ruff remained on the ice where trainers quickly scurried towards him. He laid down on the ice for a couple of minutes before being helped up to his skates. The head coach then skated gingerly, with the assistance of trainers, off the ice and to the locker room.
Ruff was not available to the media after practice and had to be taken for x-rays. The results are not good for the head coach, he has three broken ribs.
Leopold was obviously shaken after the collision, explaining what happened to coaches and players that weren't at that end of the ice who were close enough to see.
"Oh I lost my breath," said the defenseman. "I was looking back right when it happened and I yelled, 'Are you alright? You alright?' and right away, 'No.' So that wasn't a good thing. I know Lindy's a tough guy, he's played a lot of games in the NHL and played through a lot of injuries. Your body ends up hurting more and more every day the older you get, but that was one of those unexpected ones. Those ones are dangerous."
Leopold went back and re-told how things happened from his perspective to the media following practice.
"Accidents are part of the game I guess. That was weird," he said. "Racing for a puck with Ville [Leino] and I end up losing an edge. Right when I hit the deck I knew, no way was I getting up. I was yelling 'Heads! Heads! Heads!' and Lindy had his back turned to me and that ended up happening."
While Ryan Miller was on the other end of the ice, he added this about the untimely event.
"Scary, scary situation," he said. "Lindy's broken a few bones and had a few scrapes, a few cuts in his career so to see him in that much pain, he probably has something going on there. So hopefully he can get that sorted out, and he's alright. We need him behind the bench yelling and calling the lines."
Miller went on to say this was the second-worst injury to a coach he's seen during practice. He recalled a time where former assistant Brian McCutcheon took a puck straight to the head off a slapshot. Tyler Ennis also added he's seen coaches get hit in the head with a puck that deflected off the goal post.
The biggest relief for some of the players was that he didn't knock his head against the ice when falling.
"Lindy being a former player, he knew how to take the fall," Miller said. "He took it in to his body rather than letting his head whip back or else it could have been really devastating. Just hopefully he's going to be feeling good in a few days here."
Ruff may be in a good deal of pain but the Sabres expect to have him back at Tuesday's practice.
Completely overshadowed by the hit was the fact that Thomas Vanek did not skate with the team during practice. He's been day-to-day with an upper body injury since the beginning of February following the team's last game in Montreal. Jochen Hecht and Zack Kassian also did not skate with the team. Hecht is still dealing with concussion-like symptoms and Kassian may have been sent back to Rochester with 12 healthy forwards on the roster.
Now they can blame the bad coaching on injuries! That's just too funny. Even more fun (and even more insensitive( is that there's no danger of a concussion because I'm sure a brain scan wouldn't show much there anyways.

02/06/2012 1:55PM

Keep up the Good Work
02/06/2012 2:01PM
LOL
Lindy is Day to Day with an upper and lower body injury
02/06/2012 2:14PM
Oh, Wow...
First Billy Smith; Now Jordan Leopold. Not a good sign. The opponent is getting less tough and Lindy still can't take him.
02/06/2012 2:15PM
no complaints
i always knew i liked jordan leopold
02/06/2012 2:25PM
More Proof
the players dislike the coach. They're starting to run him in practice.
02/06/2012 2:45PM
Bag and Tag
Bag him up and ship him out he is a bum anyway
02/06/2012 2:46PM
I'm really surprised
that there aren't any low-brow, low-class comments yet about how fans hope that this means Ruff will resign as head coach so that he won't risk getting hurt again.
02/06/2012 2:48PM
This is the hockey gods way of saying
"Lindy, leave before your body hurts worse than your repuation"
02/06/2012 2:49PM
Listing??
Hey, will they call up a coach from Rochester?? You know he'll be o.k., but you just can't help giggling a bit. UBI!!!
02/06/2012 2:49PM
jeez
the injury bug must be real bad if it's now spread to the coaching staff.
02/06/2012 2:57PM
Time for a playoff run
I feel terrible making fun at Lindy's expense at a time like this. But he could use some rest like some of the other non performers.
02/06/2012 3:06PM
Looks like the coach
really took a Ruff ride. Ha ha ha ha ha.
02/06/2012 3:19PM
really
That must have benn ONE HEAVY PURSE.....LOL
02/06/2012 3:41PM
come on guys
He could have broken his arm...he is still a great coach and in spite of what you 'nay slayers' say he is not the problem..nor is the general manager...get behind these guys and cheer them on
02/06/2012 3:48PM
No
You dont like Jordan Leopold, it is just convenient for you to pretend to like him today. I am sure you dont really even like him today, it just helped the flow of your comment to pretend as if you did.
02/06/2012 4:06PM
Bad Bad Karma
You know your mojo has gone South when your head coach gets blindsided and takes a digger. I wonder if Leopold will have a chat with Shanahan over the hit. And doesn't it just figure that Leino would be involved? I don't know how we pissed off the Hockey Gods but man are they angry. Maybe a human sacrifice would help.....how about it, Drew?
02/06/2012 4:12PM
MVP
Jordon Leopold gets my vote for MVP
02/06/2012 4:17PM
Shame
The few people that have good jobs in Buffalo, sports professionals and athletes, Sabres and Bills, but the Sabres can't even skate straight! I wish they would pay me millions to do that!
02/06/2012 4:49PM
You are all terrible people
everyone of you!
02/06/2012 4:53PM
Really? Wow.
First off let me say I respect Lindy Ruff and his career. But I also want him fired. This team needs to be blown up and Regier needs to go also. Now on to the comments posted here, I hope you're all 15 years old or otherwise you're the biggest bunch of d o u c h e bags ever.
02/06/2012 5:10PM
what the?
Fitz never whined about his ribs? is lindy that much of a pansy ? Blame it on Lucic?
02/06/2012 5:38PM
what a bummer!!!
Hopefully the bum is out for the year from being behind the bench! Maybe darcy will trip over his purse and break his ankle!
02/06/2012 5:43PM
seriously?
I never post but seriously? Its the players, not Lindy- that needs to go. My only fear is they realize that too late. Get well soon Lindy, youre the only reason some of us are still optimistic about Buffalo Hockey
02/06/2012 6:49PM
Re: jeez
Yeah -- what next, Regier will get injured while inking a trade. Oh wait, that's not possible...it's not the night before the trade deadline and there's no stiffs out there to pick up.
02/06/2012 7:22PM
No comments on the Whiney Awards blog?
WGR should come up with the Shilly Awards Banquet. Top three in this order: Paul Hamilton, Mike Schopp, and Jeremy White. Keep on shillin' morons! As far as the Ruff injury: Maybe it shook him up enough to change the system. Great job Jordan!
02/06/2012 7:25PM
get guys who can skate
leino falls down 3-4 times every single shift, we should get some guys who can skate well, this team is a joke. They should be called the Buffalo Turtles.
02/06/2012 7:38PM
Whats the deal ?
Why even bother commenting on this ? You haven't posted any comments for the last 5hrs.
02/06/2012 7:39PM
Biggest Hit
Leo has put down this year
02/06/2012 7:45PM

02/06/2012 8:00PM

02/06/2012 9:37PM

02/06/2012 10:18PM
low brow comment
i hope that this means Ruff will resign as head coach so that he won't risk getting hurt again
02/06/2012 11:20PM
Lindy
Not even missing a day. What a man.
02/07/2012 5:58AM
winning
its just a matter of time until they start winning again and all you people will jump back on the band wagon. just a matter of time. why dont you people do something better than make stupid comments all the time
02/07/2012 8:41AM
Ruff
Stay down...you look better in the fetal position
02/07/2012 8:58AM
Incompetent Hockey Fans
Well to those that say get rid of the players, duh, how many players has the team been through since Ruff started coaching? Yep thought so. Been through enough to know it's no longer the players. Hope he heals well but how about St. Louis since their new coach came to town. Mr. Seriously, yes I will still banter, Ruff had a Stanley Cup team handed to him when he first started, if he's so good as a coach it wouldn't matter what players would come and go with the team, they would just continue to win like the belief system Detroit has setup. Time for all you video game hockey players to go back to your controllers...
02/07/2012 9:13AM
what a joke when you say this stuff
do you not have anything better to do.
its never good when anyone gets hurt. those of u that say the negative things here go find something to fulfill your
life other than hockey. your lost if u are happy lindy is hurt and u are not in touch with reality. its one thing to not be happy with this team they arent good. but saying negative things about lindy is ridiculous. if u want him let go thats fine but never NEVER laugh when someone gets hurt. u wouldnt want someone laughing if u gewt hurt.
come on grow up
02/07/2012 9:18AM
Re: winning
What bandwagon? Not with Ruff as coach and Regeir as general manager. That wagon is already in the junk yard besides. Changes to it couldn't be made. It could still be used like for a boat burning party at Sunset Bay. Time for a new wagon ran witha different regime of GM and coach. Wake up and smell the coffee dreamer. Just a change in thought to add, HOW 'BOUT 'DEM BANDITS???
02/07/2012 9:35AM
HUH?? ...
you "people" going to town on the fact that someone got injured, need to get a life!! I bet if someone from another team hit Lindy, you would all have a different point of view....
02/07/2012 9:55AM
Grow up
I wonder how old some of the people are that post on here. bet none of you would take shots at Ruff to his face... the wonders of being protected by the faceless internet.. Grow up people. try supporting your team for a change.
02/07/2012 10:09AM
But Blackie Guaranteed!
Pres. "do -nothing" guaranteed that Lindy would never take a fall - what happened? Don't tell me that none of the players rushed over to the scene either.
02/07/2012 11:41AM
winning
Oh no, you are very wrong. These people you are pleading to will not jump back on the bandwagon. You misunderstand them. They are to smart to ever be on any band wagon. They are like a carrot on a stick. They are never satisfied. They will claim that a championship will satisfy them, but that is a lie to you, me, and themselves. They would pick apart a Buffalo championship team. The bar will be set ever higher. The team will need to go undefeated and win a championship every year for ten years and they will say it must go on for atleast 20 years. They will never change. Just recognize them for what they are, and bash the living cr ap out of them every chance you get.
02/07/2012 6:04PM
Good hit!
First solid bodycheck Leopold has delivered all year.
02/07/2012 7:35PM
Grow up
It really doesnt matter anyhow, almost no one reads these things. I get annoyed with this guy as well. Understand that 95% of the comments that bother you are written by 1 guy. Just be glad he is not drunk yet, that is when the foul language and imagery emerge. Unfortunately, he is a 40 something year old, I know its pathetic and sad, but he is not a 15 year old like you hoped. If you want to be really depressed there are plenty of 40 somthings that behave just like this lo ser.
02/07/2012 7:37PM
injury update
Lindy has a lower body injury, why are sabres so vague when it comes to injury
02/09/2012 11:35AM
ridiculous
You people who make fun of these injuries to our Sabres should be ashamed of yourselves. You are not true Sabres fans period!!!!!!!!
