The WGR Rookie contest is easily my favorite thing we do and Friday morning is exhibit A. Howard and Jeremy chose hockey topics to be main topics between second-time contestants Rick Ribaulo and Sean Freer and from the first second of the conversation, you knew the next ten minutes were going to be good.
Sean picked Tampa Bay to be the surprise team in the East which drew a groan from Howard but Sean defended his point well. However, the main part of the conversation centered on one of the biggest debates in all sports..."how can a sports team be profitable and want to win at the same time?" That's where Rick started to shine. Rick took the fans' point of view that teams can be profitable and want to win, even if they are the Toronto Maple Leafs. Sean agreed with Rick and brought up the example of the Green Bay Packers and how people go to see the team no matter what.
I encourage everyone to listen to Friday's matchup and aim for that if you want to win this competition. It shouldn't shock anyone that Howard and Jeremy split their votes when they had to decide. I called Jeremy "chicken" because he couldn't make up his mind but I was really just kidding because it was that close. I thought Rick did a great job of reacting to the conversation, which would be great with Jeremy on Sunday mornings. However, I think Sean has a better job of succeeding at the station because he was able to defend his arguments very well and even took the lead during the debate this morning.
Without a doubt, Sean is the candidate to beat right now but all scorecards are wiped out again as we head into the finals next week. Each contestant will get their own hour on the air starting Tuesday. Here is the schedule:

Thursday - Sean Freer with Nick Mendola 7-8pm
Friday - Vic Acevedo with Jim Brinson 7-8pm
