QUICK THOUGHTS: Rangers 2, Sabres 1

nick@wgr550.com

Things I want to talk about Friday morning:

— It's very difficult to do this right now, especially considering that the 10-game winless streak includes healthy losses, but keep in mind that the power play has scored just once in its last 30-plus attempts with the man advantage, and for the majority of that time three primary power players have been missing (Derek Roy, Tim Connolly and Maxim Afinogenov) and a fourth (Jaroslav Spacek) joined their ranks recently. It's not a 10-game streak with any two of those folks back (Yes, even Max and Connolly).

— Dmitri Kalinin and Nathan Paetsch are struggling horribly. Paetsch isn't playing the puck strong along the boards, and has been careless with the puck in open ice. Kalinin is miserable, looking as bad as he has in half a decade — and that's saying something. His confidence is at an all-time low, as Kalinin is the one defenseman who is just throwing the puck on net without looking in the hopes that he doesn't cost the team near the blue line.

— Hard to fault Ryan Miller when the team scores just one in front of him, but I'm sure he'd like the Paul Mara point shot back, deflection or not.

— Kalinin and Patrick Kaleta were responsible for the first goal. Kalinin took poor position, and Kaleta needs to pick up the player drifting into the slot.

— During the Sabres' first power play, both units had three forwards behind the goal line. That's not helping anyone.

— "There Will Be Blood," starring Daniel Day-Lewis, is not nearly as good as the previews indicated. Nice to look at, but even P.T. Anderson needs to check his length at the door.
