Ottawa, ON, Canada (WGR 550) -- While the Buffalo Sabres find themselves struggling to stay in the Eastern Conference playoff chase, Jason Pominville is enjoying personal success this season. The captain has racked up 47 points (17G, 30A) in 49 games, but the disappointment of being near the bottom of the standings is not lost on him. While the deficit may be larger this year, the Sabres are in a similar spot as last season, and Pominville is not looking to throw in the towel any time soon.
Pominville met with the media on Friday to discuss his All-Star selection and his team’s struggles this season. Instead of dwelling on the missed opportunities and chances in the first half of the season, Pominville is looking forward to making a hard charge at the top 8 in the East and believes that he and his teammates are up to the task.
This is the first NHL All-Star appearance for the Repentigny, Quebec native. When this weekend is all over it is back to reality for the leader of the blue and gold. He will return to the team that sits in 14th place overall in the Eastern Conference, 10 points, and 5 spots, out of the playoffs.
That fact is not lost Pominville and his teammates. Even though this weekend is a time to get away from the game and rest for many of his teammates, the captain believes that the team’s struggles are always top of mind. Pominville believes that as a group the blue and gold “always constantly try to find ways to improve yourself or find ways to improve the team. Not finding excuses but finding ways that can help the team out. I think it’s on everybody’s mind and I think it should be that way and we want to be better and we know we can be better.“ The Sabres will need to look like the team start started the year 10-5-0, and not the one that has gone 10-19-5 since.
Despite the grim outlook after such a promising start, the captain does have hope that Buffalo can make a run at a playoff spot, adding, “there’s a lot of games to be played yet and we gotta make a push and we gotta make it soon but at the same time…it is tough to keep it off your mind, you’re constantly thinking about it.” Winning in New Jersey to start the All-Star break was a step in the right direction for Buffalo. The victory snapped a 5-game losing skid and gave the team only their third win in January (3-7-1).
If the Sabres do not make the playoffs, they will have squandered what was a brilliant start to the 2011-12 season. After posting back-to-back wins in Europe the blue and gold rattled off separate 3-game and 4-game win streaks, respectively before heading into a tailspin. That fact is not lost on Pominville, acknowledging, “got off to a really good start…expectations were high, we got a good start. I mean, for a little while we were winning games that we probably should’ve lost and losing games that we probably should’ve won and then had to deal with, with a bunch of injuries.”
Pominville is not using injuries as a tool to excuse the season away. Instead, he praised the players called up from Rochester to this point, and is not looking back on what could have been. Instead, he is adamant that the players in the Sabres’ locker room “know that we have the personnel to get ourselves back, back in the hunt.”
------------------
Daniel Alfredsson selected Pominville to take part in the skills challenge relay competition on Saturday night. He is slated to be a target shooter in the competition, and will also get a chance in the elimination shootout competition.
Luke Adam was selected as one of the rookies to take part in the skills competition on Saturday as well. He will compete in the hardest shot competition as member of Team Chara.
You can hear the All-Star Game live from Scotiabank Place at 4 o’clock on Sunday on the flagship home of the Sabres Radio Network – WGR Sports Radio 550.
The math doesn't lie. Sabres should need 94 points or more this year to make the playoffs. That means we need to earn points at close to a 75% rate for ALL remaining regular season games. We need to win 3 out of every 4 games here on out. For every pair of remaining games, if we won one and then lost the other in OT (for a single point) WITHOUT a single loss the rest of the way, we could do it. Less than that type of production means we miss the playoffs. Who thinks this team is capable of that, or that type of turnaround at this point? This season is done. The sooner everyone grasps that the better. Sell at the trade deadline!

Captian??
What a weak choice he was as captian. It shoulda been someone who leaves it all out on the ice every night. Gustad comes to mind but even more so, Vanek. Tom V. started playing like he wanted it a couple yrs ago when they rotated the C's and he wore it. Even Gerby would have been a much better choice if not for him being so young. Pommer's a good player but not the intense, refuse to be denied type. That's what this team needs.

math
ditto math's comment...blow this sucker up!

Any trades yet???
Before thinking playoff push, the Sabres need to make trades now while on the all star break otherwise forget about it. As of now the silence gets more deafening as the clock ticks away and the break nears a close. Before you know it, Tuesday night will arrive and the puck will drop at Montreal and the Sabres will still be status quo and more losses will mount. Get on the phone Darcy you idiot and get to work!!!

RE: Captian???
Seriously?? First you spelled in wrong! Second, Goose as a Captain? The same guy who had to be called out for not sticking up for Miller on the Lucic hit? Third, where has TV been lately? He needs to be the best player on the ice every night! Pommers is the only candidate for Captain on this team other than Reiger or Erhoff.

the fact was not lost on me..
that you use that particular phrase 3 times in this short article. Work on the word-smithery, otherwise, good job.

Look--
I have nothing against Pommer. He seems like a nice gentleman and he's had a good season for us. He shouldn't be the captain but it's not his fault Lindy stuck a "C" on his sweater. His comments about how "we are notdone yet" and so on are cute and everthing, but there's no way that is happening. The Sabres have not won back to back games since the first half of November. This baby is over!

This management team
will use the ridiculous chance at making the playoffs to stand pat & do nothing like every year for the last 14. This team is as far from making the playoffs as they could possibly be. They need to win 3 out of every 4 yet they have barely won 1 out of every 4 since the start of December. They have a 0.28 winning percentage for the last 2 months, what makes ANYONE think they can all the sudden start winning 3 out of 4 for the rest of the season with this group of players & Lindy's system? Has anyone watched their games for the last 2 months? Get real, start dumping salaries, gathering draft picks, get a real GM in here & get started on next season. Don't wait any longer!
01/28/2012 10:54AM
uh
oooooooooooooooooooooook
01/28/2012 11:16AM
Record
They need to go 24-9 for the remainder of the season to hope for the playoffs
01/28/2012 1:37PM
Is He For R E A L ?????
No way are they making the playoffs. They can't put up two wins in a row. Sell off the core players. Create cap space and get some centers who can play the position as a playmaker for guys like Pommers and Vanek. Next Year they can make an impact and would have a chance. Make moves at trade deadline for next year.

This Season
Is over, get over it, it's done, finished. Get a freggin clue WGR.
01/28/2012 1:51PM
Gaustad as Captain? Are you joking!!!
Captains lead by example. Gaustad has 4 goals and 6 assists for 2.3 million and when his teammate needed him after getting "bull dozed" by Lucic, he wimped out and and was afraid to fight him! HE WAS ON THE ICE AND DIDN'T HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE NEXT SHIFT! END OF STORY!!!!! A captain would not let his goalie get run over by a freight train. Everyone is laughing at this team. He is part of the weak core of this team and is part of the problem. Good thing his contract is up and his time in Buffalo.

Ted Black is talking out of both sides of his mouth..
the sabres will be selling ; not buying this next month.
01/28/2012 3:32PM
Hey Pominville
Do us all a favor and lose the next 15 games. The last thing we need is for Pegula to have a false sense of hope and think that Darcy and Lindy has turned this team around. If Darcy is GM next year I will not renew my season tickets. Besides you guys would be out in the first round anyways. As far as captain goes you are not captain material. There isn't one player on this team that could or should be captain of anything. No, Darcy got rid of the Captains years ago. Drury and Briere, all in one breadth. Fricken joke
01/28/2012 7:21PM
Joking
You make a good point but Gustad is the closest in terms of effort that we have and thats that. Maybe we were getting a bit ahead of ourselves thinking the turnaround would be quick. ....also....What became of our firebreathin D man Robyn R.? Probably figured out pretty quick that he was alone.... Now you drink some warm milk and take a deep breath sunshine. The sun el come up tomorrow.
01/28/2012 7:45PM
Pushin hard
for their first winning streak since November.
01/29/2012 10:52AM
Any trades yet???
Is anybody out there enjoying the silence???
01/29/2012 7:16PM
Playoffs?
LOL, Playoffs, I hope we can just win a game.
Goose, 38 playoff games ZERO goals, over paid 4th liner, typical Darcy guy, when Miller was hit Goose did nothing. As for his faceoffs, He was 49% against Boston in the series and 37 % in that final game. Against Flyers he lost 2 important draws at the end of games that led to tying and winning goals.

Pommers wants the team to stay as is...
He says he likes the "chemistry" huh? What's not to like? Same Coach and GM year in and year out means that there's no pressure to win. New owner spends TONS of money on new facilities as reward for lousy play and then blames injuries when the 'chips start falling.' President of the team preaches "status quo" when ship he's steering is heading for waterfall. How do I get on this team!? Wouldn't you just love ANY of the jobs from Pegula on down? I sure would. Million bucks for doing nothing. Now they want a playoff push? WHY? Why waste my and all the fans time?
01/30/2012 9:05AM
Good luck with that
Also, nice that he is ready. How about the other players. Are they ready too? If so, great. But why weren't you ready from mid October through now? Still can't win two games in a row.
01/30/2012 11:28AM
Yes
Getting ready for that late season push to the golf course! Need to get workin on that chipping and putting Pommer!
01/30/2012 11:43AM
Playoffs?!
Playoffs? Playoffs? They're just trying to win two games in a row and you're talking about playoffs?
01/30/2012 9:35PM
I hope he breaks his leg
We need Pommer and Vanek(Charlie Hustle) to break their legs so we miss the playoffs and get a top pick, what good does it do to finish in the middle.
