Pominville Leads Sabres to 6-0 Rout of Bruins

Jason Pominville scored twice against the Bruins on Wednesday in a game dominated by the Sabres 6-0. It was a game that featured plenty of goals and fights, and a Ryan Miller shutout. Head inside for more!

The Sabres were the better team during an action-packed 1st period, one that saw a pair of fights as well as a pair of Buffalo goals. Christian Ehrhoff got the scoring started 6:23 into the game when his blueline shot was deflected and fluttered past the glove of Bruins netminder Tukka Rask. The Sabres made it a two-goal lead about 8 and a half minutes later on Jason Pominville's 18th goal of the season. A beautiful spin move and backhand pass by Ville Leino cut through the Boston crease and onto the stick of Pominville, who tapped it into the net to make it 2-0 Buffalo. As for the scraps, Cody McCormick and Shawn Thornton went at it at the 2:26 mark of the opening period. Later, Patrick Kaleta and Milan Lucic dropped the gloves right off a faceoff as Kaleta withstood a barrage of Lucic punches.

Tyler Ennis put the Sabres up 3-0 just 1:52 into the 2nd period when he gained possession at his own blue line, sliced his way through the Boston defense, and slipped the puck by Rask and into the net. That proved to be all for Rask, who gave way to Tim Thomas following Ennis' goal. Buffalo continued to pummel Boston with scoring chances during a power play chance a few minutes later, but hit the post a couple times and Thomas did the rest with a few impressive saves. Late in the period, Kaleta's 5th made it a 4-0 game as he beat Thomas from a bad angle after being redirected off McQuaid. Less than a minute later, Thornton mixed it up again, this time hopping off the bench to fight Mike Weber.

Pominville's 2nd goal of the game upped Buffalo's lead at the 1:18 mark of the final period. The Sabres captain flipped a backhand shot into the net to make it a 5-0 game. Following yet another scrum between Kaleta, and this time Adam McQuaid, Drew Stafford added his 9th goal to put the Sabres up 6-0. Ryan Miller continued his hot streak, stopping all 36 shots he faced.

Buffalo has now gained a point in 9 straight home games, dating back to December 10th. The Sabres are back at First Niagara Center on Friday night against the Dallas Stars. With the victory, Buffalo leapfrogs into 12th place in the Eastern Conference, 9 points back of 8th place Ottawa.

Great win Sabres, Another excellent victory, Keep up your winning ways and keep knocking down your opponents one by one!!!
02/08/2012 10:36PM
Team Effort
the sabres showed they can play if they really want to? now they have to keep most of that intensity up for the rest of the year? can they do it?
02/08/2012 11:10PM
As one of the resident haters here
I will tip my hat to the Sabres tonight. They fought, hit, scored, and Miller played excellent. Normally I come on here and rip the team, management and coaching into pieces, but I'l let you all rejoice tonight. Don't get used to it though guys. Oh but I have to add, FIRE RUFF! Sorry, had to say it
02/08/2012 11:29PM
Kaleta!
Gordie Howe hat trick!!! OH YEAH!!!
02/08/2012 11:33PM
NBC Sports (Versus)
I have never called a radio station, or in this case written a comment. However, after watching the game on TV tonight, I had to comment. Until the end of the game, a listener would have thought that the Sabres were losing the game. I know some of those guys were connected to the Bruins in the past, but it sounded like it was the Boston broadcasters (homers) calling the game. They didn't even mention Lucic putting the stick on Kaleta at the end and barely even talked about the misconduct. I should state that, I usually don't get upset about any Anti - Buffalo malarkey (not the coach). For instance the Brady Hotel thing. I thought that was funny, but tonight it was all Boston all the time. Thanks L.M. Smith
02/08/2012 11:42PM
Waiting for....
the influx of people that are going to start saying that james patrick should continue on as head coach behind the bench...it's just 1 game people.
02/08/2012 11:45PM
Huge
Losing streak coming up starting on Friday. It's gonna get uuuuuuuuuuuuuugly!
02/08/2012 11:59PM
way to play guys!
wow nice goin' boys!
02/09/2012 12:04AM
What
is wrong with the lo sers from Virginia, Florida, North Carolina, and Nevada telling local Sabre fans to boycott games? What nerve. They are not fans, they are crazed television viewers. If they dont like what they are watching, change the channel. If you dont like watching Sienfeld, you dont watch Sienfeld. Simple. Quit crying on here. The rest of us dont find you cute or entertaining. You are annoying.
02/09/2012 12:06AM
Waaaaaaahhhhh!!!!
Waaaaaaaahhhh, I want a higher draft pick, I want Lindy and Darcy fired, this game is not helping my agenda.......WAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!
02/09/2012 12:07AM
I am
so stupid, I say that Patrick should be coach. He is better than Lindy, he proved it tonight.
02/09/2012 12:12AM
Ohhhhh
The Big Bad Bruins!! Are you not ashamed of your Sabres for being such weaklings. I want a team like the Bruins because I am a violent drunk who prefers my team beats up the other team, who cares who wins, I want to be a fan of the tough or "HARD" or anti soft team.
02/09/2012 12:13AM
Kaleta
played his game well tonight.
02/09/2012 12:15AM
Ryan Miller
is worth every penny. He is an elite goalie to build a team around. He is the greatest Sabre ever.
02/09/2012 12:17AM
Waaaahhh
I want R&R fired now!!!!! I hate when the Sabres win because then they might not fire Lindy and Darcy. I dont care if they ever win a cup, I just want Lindy and Darcy fired. That is all that matters.
02/09/2012 12:21AM
Hahahahah
Patience and getting healthy is all it takes cry babies. OH....so sorry you cant always have exactly what your whiney self wants exactly when your whiney self wants it. Poor Baby. Black, Pegula, Regier, and Ruff are 50 billion times better hockey talent than you, and surprise surprise, they are correct. Patience is the right play, and Health will help get on a roll. OK, time to crawl back under your rock.
02/09/2012 1:48AM
Hey, now thats the Buffalo Hockey I know!
Great job tonight guys! Still need to make a move or two but only 9pts back. Anything can happen.
02/09/2012 2:03AM
Real Buffalo fans...
I find it funny that when the Sabres destroy the Bruins all the negative bashers take the night off. Surely you can find something negative to complain about. Maybe their parent's basement doesn't get DirectTV. Good game Sabres, keep it going.
02/09/2012 6:46AM
Re: Real Buffalo fans...
The game was on versus. Your insult = fail.
02/09/2012 7:52AM
Are you sure?
That was James Patrick behind the bench and not Teddy Nolan? Way to go Sabres--I was proud to be a fan last night.
02/09/2012 8:01AM
Means nothing
This game does nothing but move the Sabres up the draft ladder. They are 9 points out of 8th with less than 30 games left. If anyone can be realistic for a minute, they do not stand a chance so they are now just working towards getting another average 1st round pick instead of a possible game changer. I want to see them do well as much as any other fan but 14 years of this is enough. Changes have to be made. This team does not have a real fighter to stand toe to toe with most other teams, they do not have a top 20 goal scorer (Vanek might be if he ever had an actual center), their defense is more offense than defense & the goaltending has dropped off significantly. This is all created by the GM & not used properly by the coach. Time for changes! That being said, I love the quality of the games shown on NBC Sports (Versus) but the announcers are IDIOTS! Mike Emrich is clueless. Some of the things he says are just baffling. Why is he considered an expert & the best of the best? That dude is lost in the sauce!
02/09/2012 8:05AM
coaching
to anyone who thinks they played better cause Patrick was behind the bench instead of Ruff doesn't know what they are talking about.
02/09/2012 8:22AM
Ruff should take Darcys spot
The shot of Ruff sitting I saw him wired up with an ear piece, and using a laptop “working”, Darcy just sits there with that "why me" look on his face. I think Ruff maybe able to get a better prospective on the game; he has a brilliant mind for the game. I just liked the fact that the coaching staff was earning their pay! Replace Darcy or make him the towel boy, promote Ruff and put Patrick on the bench.
02/09/2012 8:28AM
I don't think I bash
but I do say that, over a season, we're a middling Fair hockey team. Last night was exciting but we're still not going anywhere long term (CUP) with the core as it is... and, dare I say it, management as it is. Still, nice night for hockey in buffalo with some real entertainment.
02/09/2012 8:39AM
Keep on moving
What a game with Ruff a few hundred feet away. Wonder what they'd be like with Ruff a few hundred miles away.
02/09/2012 8:45AM
cup
It still doesn't change the fact that this core will not win a cup.
02/09/2012 8:45AM
You're right...
All I do want is to see Darcy and Lindy fired. Because I'm capable of looking at the entire 14-year body of work for those two fools and not just one win. I didn't realize the NHL gave out the Stanley Cup for beating the Bruins 6-0. Do any of you preaching "patience" and "injuries" honestly think that Pominville and his purse could actually beat the Bruins or Red Wings in a playoff series? This is still a 12th place team, and it's Darcy's fault. It was a nice win tonight, but Lindy and Darcy NEED to go. I would rather see them lose out, clean house, and draft high -- not go on some heroic, meaningless run to 11th place in the conference. "Hey, we didn't finish last!"
02/09/2012 8:45AM
Settle down people...
Just because the Bruins DIDN'T care for one game doesn't mean that all is well. Even the '74-'75 Capitals won a few games and the Cleveland Barons beat some good Sabres' teams as well. This team is going nowhere with the "core" that they have and their young players are not impressive at all. It is in the best interest of all the NHL teams to let the Sabres win here and there so that the delusional management can be allowed to continue this trainwreck of a team. Nothing will ever change with this team and that's fine by me. I will buy the tickets because I want to see an NHL game and I won't even worry about the Sabres winning a Stanley Cup simply because they won't win one. The sooner people accept this fact the better. And no, I'm not miserable I just have better things to worry about with my time than to waste it worrying about why Lindy Ruff is still coaching. Look at it this way, the sad tradition of the original logo is alive and well and playing at the Aud, err...Marine Mid, err...HSB, err...First Niagara Center.
02/09/2012 8:47AM
Enjoyed the Loss by Bruins ...
Sabres did their best job ... but the Game showed this Sabres team can not compete for the ultimate prize. FREAKING SMALL!!! Every fight they lost. Kaleta v. Lucic, it was like toddler v. adult fight. Lucic's eyes wide open and staring at Kaleta the whole time. Hated every fight. AND THEY DON'T HIT! Why do they shy away from hitting?
02/09/2012 8:48AM
delusional
Your delusional if you think because they beat a disinterested Bruins team that the Sabres are okay. Again if they played with this kind of determination the majority of the time playoffs would not be a problem. The sad fact is we have seen this story before and we will see it again. Enjoy the spurt while it lasts.
02/09/2012 8:52AM
When will we get a brawler?
If you have a small team you need to have someone that puts fear in other team's players! The Lucic's of the NHL will keep running our players until we get someone!
02/09/2012 8:53AM
One game out of 82?
You pay money to see them show up for one game? That's an accomplishment?
02/09/2012 8:55AM
They can't win when it counts
9 out of 10 games Bruins will beat them into submission.
02/09/2012 8:56AM
Nov 12, first reaction
should have been to trade for a player who can beat Lucic to a pulp. They never did it and will never win big in this league.
02/09/2012 9:55AM
6-0?!?!
this is a BIG win, great job boys! you've boosted all the Sabre-Nation's morale (and the team's!)!!!
02/09/2012 10:09AM
Any trades yet???
Still need them to happen regardless. WAKE UP REGEIR and get him to work. Beating Boston does not mean stay at status quo. You know what I mean. Don't forget, the Sabres are not in playoff position. Let's not get carried away reading some of these bandwagon comments on here.
02/09/2012 10:36AM
RE: Kaleta!
He didn't get the assist needed to complete the Gordie Howe hat trick. He still played his game right last night, and deserved the 3rd star for riling up the Bruins.
02/09/2012 11:14AM
Sabres need enforcer !!!!
One thing that has become evidently clear is that the Sabres need to revisit carrying a 6'5 240 lb. enforcer. As admirable as it was to watch Kaleta,McCormick, and Weber try to battle with Lucic and Thorton, they just aren't big or strong enough to handle those guys, let alone Chara. And to be honest,it really isn't fair to ask them to keep taking beatings from the same guys going back to last year. If we were to look into getting a Brian McGratton type player to add to the aforementioned players,I firmly believe it would make a big difference on the ice and in the locker room if the Sabres made a minor move like this. If you have ever watched Lucic against other teams,he is as quiet as a church mouse when there is a legit tough guy on the other team and loves going after guys smaller in stature than himself. Thorton is one of the toughest players in the league and we just don't have an answer for him. I think it is something that really needs to be addressed.
02/09/2012 11:18AM
WGR Fan Poll
The shills are fixing the votes again. I'd prefer a top five pick was my vote, yet it may have been cancelled out by the clowns there at the station on mine and for many to keep the first selection playoff spot look good. The Sabres not going to get a playoff spot being realistic. Its TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLATE!!! By not bettering this team when they should have, they'll stay where they are being closer to the bottom. FIRE REGEIR!!! A top five pick will be a reality gauranteed.
02/09/2012 12:22PM
RE: Ohhhhh...
Uhhhhh, CAN YOU SAY STANLEY CUP? stop the drug abuse, idiot.
02/09/2012 12:26PM
Thoughts
Trade Vanek for Getzlaf. Keep Ruff away from behind the bench. Keep him in the press box or just plain fire the bumb! I haven't seen a game like this in 14 years.
02/09/2012 12:50PM
2 points
We'll take it; now lets go get the next 2
02/09/2012 1:20PM
Re: youre right
We all know you want a stanley cup yesterday, how is the weather in florida, North Carolina, Nevada, by the way? It just does not work like that. I believe this management group will take a patient, well thought out, non reactionary approach to building a championship team. I know it drives you crazy, but you cant just wave your magic wand and have a top team. Regier cant do it, and neither can any of the other GMs out there. Trades are value based deal, yes sometimes teams get a steal, but that is rare, usually it is a little better or a little worse, just like FA signings. I am not saying that this team is perfect, it needs work, but I am saying I still have confidence that the ownership model is a proven successful one, not just because of hydrofracking, but in all industries and business. I know it drives you crazy because your television set is not showing you exactly what you want to see right now, but.......change the channel. If you dont like Seinfeld dont watch Seinfeld. Rest assured that a new GM cannot wave his magic wand either. Be certain that what Black repeats constantly is the business model. Remember that Tim Thomas was not a first round draft choice. Finally, see your agenda for what it is, you have closed your mind off.

use of the "copy and paste" function at 8:45am for those three posts. A stupid person would think they were done by three different people. Not anyone over 5 years old though. Atleast not anyone from an educated blue state. Are you from the south or southwest? Boy those polls sure disturb you. No I dont think GR edits the polls. You are showing signs of paranoia. Only
total LO SERS play for draft picke!!!! People who have no compete!!! Fantasy sport playing GEEKS play for draft picks!!!! Do some top five picks become stars? Yes, but for everyone, there are 25 who do not!!!! Sharing the pain and the joy is part ofbeing a fan of a team. Grow up. Magic wands only exist on Harry Potter, just watch that instead if you cant take it.
02/09/2012 1:42PM
Ted Black
is awesome, He stood there and took the barrage, even when some of the reasonable fans were turning on the team. They stayed on message. I think the mistake a lot of fans made when Terry bought them is they heard he was a fan. They then ran with it to where they thought the team would do things exactly the way they would. INsane. Out of touch. Divorced from reality. They have a successful business plan, they believe in it, I believe in it, they are going to follow it, and eventually it is going to all fall into place. Listening to the whims of insane fans is a clear path to disaster.
02/09/2012 1:46PM
ROLL UP
IN THE FETAL POSITION AND CRY IT OUT!!!! WAHWAHWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH! I WANT DARCY AND LINDY FIRED!!!!!!! WAHWAHWAHWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!! NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE AGREE WITH ME!!!!!! WAHWAHWAHWAHWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!! NO ONE IS HELPING MY AGENDA!!!! WAHWAHWAHWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!

Re:WGR Fan Poll
The question was "which would you prefer for the Sabres", not what do you think has a better chance of happening. Even still, you have lost your mind, of course people would "prefer" a playoff spot! Who wouldnt? Well, unless you desperately wanted R&R fired. Your paranoia and "shill" comments are ridiculous. I think you believe that anyone who does not punch Lindy and Darcy in the face as soon as they lay eyes on them is a "shill".
02/09/2012 4:28PM
Every team
Has a win streak during the season and even the bottom feeders occasionally have blowout wins over a top team that may be struggling at the time. This team is still awful Buffalo fans are so pathetic.
02/09/2012 5:11PM
No we didn't take the night off
Yah it was a nice win last night. Where was that for the last 3 months or so? We are on a pace now to probably just miss the playoffs and destroy our chance to get a decent draft pick. Confidence in Darcy and Lindy will be restored, and we we'll be in the same boat next year, for the third season in a row. Great! How stupid are you people? Do you think this Sabres team can win the Cup, or even a round in the playoffs against a team like Boston? We have a lot of work to do. Us negative types would like to see the critical changes that need to made come as soon as possible, that's all. Because we love the team and would like to see them win the Cup before we die. You "yay we won, let's go Buffalo!" types, if in charge of the team, would hand us another 40 years of mediocrity. Let's see if they can keep it up again tomorrow.
02/09/2012 5:18PM
Sick of Getting Beat Up
I think this game was refreshing in that the Sabres initiated and answered the physical bell. Winning also helps. But Im sick of watching 'my team' get their butts handed to them in every altercation. This team needs to get tougher. I know winning fights does not equal wins... but this team is going to have to do a lot more to Boston than one 6-0 win. They are going to keep coming and the Sabres are going to have to answer the bell each time and get beat up. I havent seen these guys do this on a consistent basis in years...
02/09/2012 8:39PM
Need a real Captain
Palminville is what is wrong with this team. I don't care that he scores from the perimeter. He is a coward who curls away from every opportunity to forecheck. That style of play is why they create little offense. Get rid of Stafford too and bring in some guys with grit.
02/09/2012 10:20PM
Re: Re: You're Right
Well, I think we'd all love to have the Stanley Cup yesterday... but I'd settle just to have a team that is able to hold people accountable when they are not producing results. It's performance-based business, friends. We have 15 years of work here to make a very educated judgement on Darcy Regier's performance as a GM. I don't need to go into specifics here, because his history of failed trades, ridiculous contracts, botched drafts, ambivalence towards the shortcomings of his players, and just general incompetence is well-known and well-documented. Do you honestly believe that Darcy Regier is capable of making the hard decisions and executing the right deals to assemble a team that has sustainable talent and toughness to make a deep run to the playoffs? I'm just tired of the Darcy & Lindy show, because I already know how it ends. I'd just like to see an owner in this town make a move to prove to everyone that this cycle of comfortable mediocrity is not acceptable, and that the standards of performance are higher than what we've seen for the past decade or so. So, enjoy your evening all snuggled up in your Pominville PJs (I'm sure Darcy has a pair just like them), and have fun with the inevitable contract extensions that relatively useless players like Gaustad and Hecht are going to receive -- I don't look forward to having this same discussion with you at this time next year... because mark my words, unless there's a change in the GMs office, we'll all be right back here again in 12 months. Don't hate me, hate Darcy.
02/09/2012 11:05PM
wtf
you all make me sick, doesn't seem like anyone knows anything about hockey i read and i think what idiots. team looked good but so does the rest of the league will be interesting save the drama for the end of the season.
