Jason Pominville scored twice against the Bruins on Wednesday in a game dominated by the Sabres 6-0. It was a game that featured plenty of goals and fights, and a Ryan Miller shutout. Head inside for more!
The Sabres were the better team during an action-packed 1st period, one that saw a pair of fights as well as a pair of Buffalo goals. Christian Ehrhoff got the scoring started 6:23 into the game when his blueline shot was deflected and fluttered past the glove of Bruins netminder Tukka Rask. The Sabres made it a two-goal lead about 8 and a half minutes later on Jason Pominville's 18th goal of the season. A beautiful spin move and backhand pass by Ville Leino cut through the Boston crease and onto the stick of Pominville, who tapped it into the net to make it 2-0 Buffalo. As for the scraps, Cody McCormick and Shawn Thornton went at it at the 2:26 mark of the opening period. Later, Patrick Kaleta and Milan Lucic dropped the gloves right off a faceoff as Kaleta withstood a barrage of Lucic punches.
Tyler Ennis put the Sabres up 3-0 just 1:52 into the 2nd period when he gained possession at his own blue line, sliced his way through the Boston defense, and slipped the puck by Rask and into the net. That proved to be all for Rask, who gave way to Tim Thomas following Ennis' goal. Buffalo continued to pummel Boston with scoring chances during a power play chance a few minutes later, but hit the post a couple times and Thomas did the rest with a few impressive saves. Late in the period, Kaleta's 5th made it a 4-0 game as he beat Thomas from a bad angle after being redirected off McQuaid. Less than a minute later, Thornton mixed it up again, this time hopping off the bench to fight Mike Weber.
Pominville's 2nd goal of the game upped Buffalo's lead at the 1:18 mark of the final period. The Sabres captain flipped a backhand shot into the net to make it a 5-0 game. Following yet another scrum between Kaleta, and this time Adam McQuaid, Drew Stafford added his 9th goal to put the Sabres up 6-0. Ryan Miller continued his hot streak, stopping all 36 shots he faced.
Buffalo has now gained a point in 9 straight home games, dating back to December 10th. The Sabres are back at First Niagara Center on Friday night against the Dallas Stars. With the victory, Buffalo leapfrogs into 12th place in the Eastern Conference, 9 points back of 8th place Ottawa.
