Hey DUKE...thanks for coming...

whitey@wgr550.com

Jumping inside my brain, let's just say it'd be a HARROWING experience for anyone.  I HATE the three point shot in college basketball.  I don't write columns...so this is more what pops into my head, gets typed in.  Enjoy:

The THREE:  It's actually more of a love-hate relationship.  I appreciate that it adds excitement to the game.  I know that it makes games MUCH closer.  I just hate teams like Duke...because with that brilliant head coach of theirs...they just resort to BAD BASKETBALL.

In a loss to West Virginia, Duke was exposed for the soft, long range team that they have been for the last four seasons.  This team can get away with its "bombs away" mentality in the ACC.  But seriously, meet a team that actually forces them to  to WORK to score?  They're dead.

Duke went 5 for 22 from 3 in a 6 point loss to the Mountaineers.  How many 3's did WVU attempt?  Eleven.

HEY COACH K!!!  HEY GREG PAULUS!!!  YOU MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER WORKING IT TO THE INSIDE!!!  REMEMBER???  THAT'S WHERE BASKETBALL WAS CREATED!

It's a novel idea.  If Illinois had done it in 2005, they might have a national title.  Instead the free firing Illini jacked up 40 attempts from beyond the arc...in a 5 point loss to the Tarheels.  Illinois that day attempted 40 threes...and 6 free throws.

But every year what happens?  Teams fall in love with the deep ball.  It's like the Bills hoping to hit on an 83 yard TD.  You have to play the game first, and do the spectacular stuff second.

They won't do it...and next year...they'll live it over again like Groundhog Day.  A 2 seed, perhaps a 1, and an early exit for the Blue Devils.

The three is great when it goes in...but we just might see better basketball if a lot of teams decided to phase it OUT.

Who are you picking to win on Sunday?

  Seattle
