Step outside the realm of journalism for a second, and allow me to be a Buffalonian. I've been a season ticket holder for the Bills who was gifted a Marshawn Lynch jersey last Christmas to wear to games. It's my first Bills jersey since the No. 97 Cornelius Bennett jersey I wore to "Bills Day" each Monday after a Bills win at St. Amelia's School (I also had a slick "Roast the Dolphins" sweatshirt featuring a giant Buffalo in a chef's hat cooking a sweating dolphin on a grill. The dolphin is No. 51, and looks displeased).
This whole thing makes me sick, not because I think Lynch is being treated fairly or unfairly, or anything debatable like that. What turns my stomach is -- and yes, I'm going there -- the idea that this could be a case involving my fiancee, mom, sisters or any girl I know. That someone I care for very deeply could've been hit by a car --on film -- and the owner of the offending vehicle could have legal rights to not talk to police.
Again, ignore that this is a situation involving Lynch. Your wife limps home and informs you that she was involved in a hit-and-run on Chippewa, but there's video footage of the crime. Wouldn't you want to feel secure that someone was going to have to at least talk about the situation? Even if your wife dropped out of the sky and power punched the roof of the vehicle, you'd want to know what went down.
I'm not going to launch into any diatribe about guilt or non-guilt, but I definitely feel let down in this situation, which isn't an indictment against myself. By now, shouldn't I have moved past putting professions in esteem? After all, an athlete really is no different from a radio guy, firefighter or middle management executive. Human beings have responsibilities, too, and I hate legal garbage.
It's like those episodes of television crime dramas where the stealth lawyer creeps around to find evidence, and then it's inadmissable because he doesn't have a warrant. This isn't the Zodiac killer, it's a hit-and-run where the victim's fine. I get why the laws are in place, but sometimes I wish common sense could win. Then again, I like America.
