West Seneca, NY (WGR 550) -- Week 3 of our high school football broadcasts takes us to the Monsignor Martin league and a classic Western New York rivalry with Canisius and St. Joe’s. It’s a special Saturday afternoon edition of Friday Night Lights on WGR Sports Radio 550 with coverage starting right after Sportstalk Saturday.
Canisius(2-0) comes into the game with its high scoring offense clicking early this season. The offense has scored 105 points in its first two games; including a 64-point output in Week 1 in their win over McQuaid out of Section V in Rochester. Last week Canisius won 41-6 at Elmira Free Academy. QB Chris Jugovic threw for 4 TD’s and led the offense to a day of almost 500 yards of production. On defense, safety Anthony Iacono made 12 tackles and had two fumble recoveries. The Crusaders are coached by Rich Robbins.
St. Joe’s(1-1) comes in looking to make it two straight wins after a 47-32 win over Monsignor Farrell last weekend. Senior quarterback Chad Kelly threw for 257 yards and 5 touchdowns in the win. Chad is the nephew of former Bills Hall of Fame QB Jim Kelly. Kelly has verbally committed to attend Clemson next fall. Nigel Davis ran for 105 yards on just 8 carries. Marauders head Coach Dennis Gilbert said that this week’s practice has been very intense and physical for his team, and he said the focus for his team was that the “game” against Canisius started with practice back on Monday.
Coverage starts at 1pm with Brian Koziol, Tony Caliguri and Mike Ferrentino.
