Football and football

nick@wgr550.com

The two biggest sports stories in my life right now both involve football, one being of the tackle variety, and the other what Americans call soccer.

First, an advertisement for ESPN, which I can't believe I'm doing. Today at 2 p.m., I will be at a bar watching the equivalent of an All-Star Game that matter. The UEFA title game, between Manchester United and Chelsea, is the paring down of every good club soccer team in the world to two. For the first time in three decades, both these teams are English, and they hate each other.

We'll use hockey standards. Imagine the four best teams in the NHL played in a tournament with the best teams from other leagues around the world. Now imagine that instead of Moscow Dynamo vs. the Penguins, or Byrnas IF vs. the Red Wings, the NHL teams fought through to the final, and the Penguins and Red Wings were dueling again, after having already played for the Stanley Cup, they'll try to win the trophy that names them the best in the world. In soccer, they call this "The Double."

It'll be well worth watching, so give soccer another try.

Let me sum up what I'm sure will be my least-read column of all-time (trumping the 2007-08 basketball preview, hooray!) by saying that the NFL punches me in the throat every day. I know baseball teams make a ton of money, too, but the labor struggles, cheating, arrests and failure to pay their veterans makes me sick. I'll always watch the Bills, and root for guys like Brett Favre, Donovan McNabb and other class acts, but this league doesn't have me blindfolded. It's all money, and it's disgusting.

Sorry. I'm bitter. Time to go watch football. The other one.
