Flyers Acquire Rights to Goalie Bryzgalov

The Philadelphia Flyers’ goaltending was exposed during the playoffs. Tuesday, they took a step toward improving their goalie production by trading for the rights to Phoenix Coyotes netminder Ilya Bryzgalov.

The Flyers gave up left winger Matt Clackson, a 2012 third-round and conditional pick for the chance to negotiated a deal before July 1.

Bryzgalov turns 31 this month and went 36-20-10 with a 2.48 goals-against average and .921 save percentage.

"After several discussions with Ilya and his agent, it became very clear to us that we were not in a position to sign Ilya to a long-term contract," Coyotes GM Don Maloney said in a statement. "We will now focus our efforts on adding another goaltender to our roster for the upcoming season."

Keep it locked to WGR as we cover the NHL off-season

good move
take notes Regier

Shoot
Great move by the Flyers, bad news for teams in the East. With good goaltending, the Flyers are the team to beat in the Eastern Conference.

interesting
TSN's Mckenzie says that bryzgalov wants top player money, not top goalie. Philthy is gonna have to dump salary for sure. Maybe the sabres can accommodate them.
06/07/2011 10:50PM
off course , Sabres dont make the first deal.
As always, it another tteam making the first big move.
06/07/2011 10:59PM
Flyers
Are taking steps to get better. That team really didn't have any waeknesses except for in goal and know they need to get better. The Sabres? Well they are having fun knocking down walls. Wait a minute now...they can't do anything because Regier seriously injured himself picking up that sledge hammer because it takes a real man to swing one! Yep same old wimp Darcy and the girly men he brought on this team as players. 40 years and counting, no stanley cups and probably never.
06/07/2011 11:52PM
What?
I'm sorry, are you all saying you want bryzgalov? The sabers have more important needs than goalie...and we need to spend money elsewhere, not on a goalie who is at best marginally better than miller. Let's not get down on Darcy for not making the first big move

cool story bro
They also traded for Hamhuis's rights last season. Cool story flyers!

Schopp
This trade is both interesting and fun.

only time will tell
Relax to all of you who want Buffalo do similar things...this guy will demand 8 million per season and that will cost them key players (assuming they dump salary...as is expected) We will see how that impacts their team dynamics. It surely will impact their depth.
06/08/2011 7:17AM
Ya Know what it is...
When Golisanno was here he had a pay phone put in for Darcy to use and then never gave him any quarters in his pay. But seriously, No I don't want Bryzgalov. I just want to be assured that Darcy is on the phone attempting to make deals and doesn't have his phone off until July 1.

Some of you are ridiculous
You're really grousing that the Sabres didn't make the FIRST move? Who cares? They have five months to make changes to the roster. Have some patience! Pegula comes in and pumps tons of money into this team improving every aspect of the organization, with it being virtually assured that he won't make that money back, and 20% of Sabres fans still complain because we didn't manage to pull off a trade for Alex Ovechkin or something ludicrous. Get a grip! As far as Regier, July 1, 2007 was obviously a debacle, but look at the young talent on this team now: Myers, Gerbe, Ennis, Gragnani, Weber, Enroth: these players didn't come out of nowhere, they were drafted by a GM with a solid eye for talent. You also have players like Adam, Kassian, Foligno and McNabb coming down the pipeline. In free agency, Regier continually finds diamonds in the rough (Leopold). The last few years have been mostly very impressive from Regier. The fact that sometimes he makes mistakes (Torres, Morrison)? Hi, welcome to pro sports, even the best talent evaluators make mistakes. Bill Parcells drafted Chad Henne.

somebody....anybody
Can anybody PLEASE tell me why we consider Miller an NHL elite..His career stats are smack dab in the middle of all NHL goalies ranging between 10-14th. He is a slightly above average goalie..over the last 5 years GAA ranks 9th, save % 7th shutouts 23rd....his perception in the NHL is that he is a superstar so he should demand a superstars return in the trade market.. Make the move. Also Rick Dudley is back out on the market since he would not move to Winnipeg, doesnt he have 2 cups? Why is there even a hesitation to bring this guy on board?
06/08/2011 8:31AM
Sometimes makes mistakes?
Has the Pegula Era already made you forget about the Briere, Drury, Campell debacle? Don't defend Darcy with an ignorant comment like that - HE'S NOT A SCOUT! He relies heavily on Kevin Devine and Joe Christiano whom I believe deserve copiousamounts of credit for finding the plethora of talent in the Sabres organization. WAKE UP.

See you can make trades yet...
FIRE REGEIR!!!

Re: Some of you are rediculous
Want to win a cup? The Flyers sure do. Their GM don't sit on his rear and waste time like Regier. Regier should be working on getting the rights to Richards now that Dallas won't be bringing him back. Think pro active idiot!
06/08/2011 9:49AM
Flyers need to Learn
This team needs to build through the draft. Not keep signing high priced vets. Although some have worked out for them. I like the way the Sabres build. Although there have been some missteps, Building through the draft and adding a couple stud vets is the way to go. TG put budgetg restraints on this team, so we may have to wait 2-3 years for this to all pan out. Our young players played valiently taking the overpriced flyers to seven games. KEEP THE FAITH!!!

Re: Some of you are "rediculous" and Sometimes Makes Mistakes
So your answer would be to bring in a 31-year old center and pay him eight million dollars per year for at least five years (which is what it's going to take, we're talking Ovechkin money or close to it)? Great call. I'm sure you wouldn't regret that signing by 2013. Then you'd have that albatross of a contract, untradeable, on your roster, weighing you down for years to come, handcuffing you. That would be a terrible move. Also, big ups to calling someone you don't know an idiot, especially when you fail at basic spelling. Super class. To the gentleman referencing Briere, Drury and Campbell, I did mention July 1st, 2007, but at this point, that's almost five years ago. It's time to move on. Drury and Campbell were badly, badly overpaid and that's not debatable anymore. Anyway, you can dwell on something that happened five years ago or look at the roster as it's currently constructed and see how well Regier has done over the last few years. You can give credit to whoever you want in the organization, but when it comes to the draft, the buck stops at Regier and you have to give him credit for having three AHL rookies of the year in a row and a recent Calder winner on his team. The future looks bright for the Sabres and it's not just because Pegula seems like a godsend (and he does); we are LOADED with young talent and that's on Regier.

agreed
to the last post, well written. the idiotic comments that people make on here are absolutely ridiculous. if people complain about the sabres and their judgments, then cheer for a different team. i cannot stand people who think they know everything, especially when they have no experience in hockey whatsoever. get a life and cheer for the team that you love, rather bicker about how you can make them better (when you have no idea how the nhl, let alone hockey operates).

Re: Some of you are rediculous
How many cups has 'the Bryz' won? Zero. Did the Flyers sign him yet? No. Can they sign him? Yes, for big money. What happens to some of their other big money players? They'll have to move a piece or two to sign Leino, Carcillo, and Bryz. Sabres have twoo good goalies that are no worse than Bryz, they can look to help Philly stay under the cap when and if they sign Bryz and need to move salary. Stop reacting like spoiled children and think for once.
06/08/2011 6:46PM
Thats a big IF...
If Philly signs him, look out. That is the main thing Philly has been missing!! They will have to dump some Salary, could Buffalo be in the mix if the right player is available?? Carter maybe?? Guess we will just have to wait and see!
06/08/2011 11:41PM
Miller 2 shutouts in the playoffs... his teamates no help.
...And we a questioning this goaltender yet again on WGR550? If Buffalo's Offense or Defense could have stole 2 games, just 2 games... Buffalo would've been in round 2. Miller did his part, should Miller skate down the rink and shoot the puck in the net too, after shuting out the best offense in the league in the playoffs?

re:Miller 2 shutouts in the playoffs
C'mon you can't tell anyone that the Flyers were that good that it was so impressive Miller had two shutouts. Boston had no problem what so ever with the Flyers. Yes Boston is better than the Sabres no question about that. Seriously thoughhow good were the Flyers? No one else was scoring for them except for Briere and Van Reimsdyk. You should have paid closer attention to playoff hockey son!
