The Miami Dolphins traded Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Taylor to the Washington Redskins Sunday, in exchange for a 2009 second round pick and a 2010 sixth round pick.
The Dolphins have been anxious to trade Taylor, who asked to be moved to a playoff contender at the beginning of the offseason. Before the draft, the Dolphins were asking for a first-round draft pick. They lowered the demand later to a second-rounder.
A roster spot opened for Taylor earlier in the day, when Redskins’ defense end Phillip Daniels suffered a season ending knee injury in a practice drill.
"We're fortunate there was a guy that caliber on the market when somebody got hurt," Washington executive vice president Vinny Cerrato said. "Normally, in most years, there's not a guy of that caliber on the market."
According to ESPN.com's John Clayton, the 33-year-old Taylor told the Redskins he did not need to renegotiate and was willing to play for the final two years of his contract. He is scheduled to make $8.1 million this season.
Taylor was drafted in the third round (73rd Overall) in 1997. He has recorded ten-plus sacks six times, including 11 in 2007. He has also started every game in the past 8 years.
In 172 career games, Taylor has tallied 117 sacks, 662 tackles, and 47 turnovers all for the Miami Dolphins. |
