It really feels to me as though this Sabres season is taking us into uncharted territory.
And I've written one sentence and have already managed to find a distraction. Is it uncharted or unchartered? I honestly don't know. Excuse me while I go look this up. If I were really cool and computer savvy I would give you a link to a song by some band you've never heard of to serve as some sort of quasi on hold music, but really you just want me to move this thing along, no?
It seems as though what I want here is uncharted. Well I feel better already and sure hope you do as well.
The fact that I am so quick to fall into a sidetracked hole is indicative of the problem we are facing as Sabres fans right now. That problem being I don't think we know what the heck to do now.
I died hard on the just hold it together until some of the injured guys come back space on the board. That was about a month ago. Around that same time I was sure the Sabres were going to make a deal because the team had all the tell tale signs of a team waiting for a move to be made, if not a wrecking ball to swing.
Cue cricket sound effect.
There was a moment on New Year's Eve when I was watching the game and saw the out of town scores and wondered whether I should be pulling for Winnipeg or Toronto? Just don't go to OT so both teams pick up points. A little bit of me died when that happened.
Now? Holy crap, I don't know. You could hope they keep losing because they would have to make a move then, right? I passed that point some time at the start of this trip that has seen the Sabres plummet all the way to buck naked last in the East. Hoping for that feels pretty much like a lost cause at this point. Now I'm watching these games wondering if the look I have on my face is similar at all to the way a caveman would have looked the first time he saw fire. Bewilderment coupled with amazement and fear.
Yipee, what time is the game tonight?
Not all of these players need to be traded in order for the Sabres to get back on track, it just feels that way. Sorting out who needs to go and who should stay is a serious, heavy lifting sort of job at this point. The idea of the architect of the mess presiding over its reconstruction could cause my brain to fall right out of my head.
We play a recorded drop on our show that says "fire everyone". It's generally meant to be funny at times when fans are freaking out and calling for the heads of the people in charge.
It's no joke right now. Seems like the play to me.
Buck naked last.
