(WGR 550) -- The Bills duties don't end on draft day, as the frenetic free agent signing period continued Monday morning. It was one of many topics broached by Bills chief operating officer Russ Brandon on The Howard Simon Show.
"It’s like the floor on Wall Street," Brandon told Jeremy White and Nick Mendola. "It’s a lot of fun. It’s one of our favorite times. There’s a lot of activity between the coaches and scouts and ourselves. We’re just finishing the process right now."
Early reports from around the country have the Bills inking four more players: Notre Dame linebacker Joe Brockington (Harrisburg Patriot-News), Miami defensive tackle Teraz McCray (South Florida Sun-Sentinel), Army fullback Mike Viti (Middletown Times Herald-Record) and Illinois State quarterback Luke Drone (Bloomington Pantagraph) are all listed as headed to Buffalo.
Brandon spent a good deal of time talking about the weekend's picks, including Troy corner back Leodis McKelvin.
"Expectations are always high. We anticipate that he will come in and play and make an impact for us."
On third-round pick, Virginia Tech defensive end Chris Ellis:
"The way we play in waves and rotate our system, you can never have enough defensive ends. He’s has great hands… (and is explosive). We felt real good that Chris was there. You’re able to recalibrate your board and sit down and anticipate the pool that may be there when things kicked off."
On fifth-round linebacker Alvin Bowen out of Iowa State:
"Bowen’s a spectacular athlete who can get to the passer and led the nation in tackles two years ago. We feel good that we’ve improved on that side of the ball."
Brandon mentioned Bowen and Ellis as being able to handle both outside linebacking and defensive end aspects of their game. Bowen is also a special teams performer, as is Kansas tight end Derek Fine, who Brandon said is a good blocker and also plays well in the slot as part of Mark Mangino's spread offense.
The Bills selected two players with what some would describe as character issues in Ellis and Indiana wide-out James Hardy. Brandon said it's an area in which the team doesn't fool around.
"We go through a pretty thorough element on that end. We felt pretty good about (Hardy), and not only adding him to our football team, but adding him to our community," Brandon said. "Again, we go through a very thorough process that begins in the Fall when our scouts spend time with the guys who are close to these players. When we bring them into our program we have a pretty good system here that’s led by Paul Lancaster."
Lastly, Brandon addressed the J.P. Losman trade issue. The quarterback was not dealt over the weekend.
"No one called about J.P. We feel real good about J.P. being on this team. He’s really positive about being here."
