Thinking about the retirement of Kerry Collins, Mike Schopp decided to make a running list of the all-time players for each NFL team. Was Collins the best ever Panther? Probably not. Mike opened up the phones for a free-for-all frenzy of teams and names. To make the discussion easier, Mike only included Superbowl era players. Here is a list of what was determined by the panel.
Most people will hate us because their answers are better. I agree with those people.
Arizona Cardinals- Aeneas Williams
Atlanta Falcons- Mike Vick
Baltimore Ravens- Ray Lewis
Buffalo Bills- Jim Kelly
Carolina Panthers- Steve Smith
Chicago Bears- Walter Payton
Cincinnati Bengals- Anthony Munoz
Cleveland Browns- Ozzie Newsome
Dallas Cowboys- Roger Staubach
Denver Broncos- John Elway
Detroit Lions- Barry Sanders
Green Bay Packers- Brett Favre
Houston Texans- Andre Johnson
Indianapolis Colts- Peyton Manning
Jacksonville Jaguars- Tony Boselli
Kansas City Chiefs- Len Dawson (done after Joe left)
Miami Dolphins- Dan Marino
Minnesota Vikings- Allan Paige
New England Patriots- Tom Brady
New Orleans Saints- Rickey Jackson
New York Giants- Lawrence Taylor
New York Jets- Joe Namath
Oakland Raiders- Jim Otto
Philadelphia Eagles- Reggie White

San Fransisco 49ers- Jerry Rice (against Mike's objection)
Seattle Seahawks- Steve Largent
St. Louis Rams- Kurt Warner
Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Derrick Brooks
Tennessee Titans- Bruce Matthews
Washington Redskins- Russ Grimm
Obviously, I would be upset if there weren't a ton of comments and arguments here.
Even though he quit on them, Jim Brown for cleveland?
07/07/2011 5:13PM
Carolina Panthers
Easily Julius Peppers
07/07/2011 5:13PM
49ers
I think Joe Montana when I think the 49ers although an argument could be made for Jerry Rice.
07/07/2011 5:14PM
Carolina Panthers
easily Julius Peppers, not close
07/07/2011 5:15PM
Pitt, Stl and Atl
Steelers-Terry Bradshaw, Rams- Marshall Faulk, Falcons- Mike Vick
07/07/2011 5:17PM
Texans
It's got to be Andre Johnson - has been with them since their 2nd year and has been on of the best WRs in the league since he's played. Nobody else on the Texans stands out.
07/07/2011 5:20PM
Jaguars
Mark Brunell - best player in in the franchise at the most important position and was around during the Jags' best years. Jones-Drew is prob the next closest.
07/07/2011 5:24PM
Cleveland Browns
Jim Brown. Duh
07/07/2011 5:26PM
Jim Brown for the Cleveland Browns
Bernie Kosar and anyone else would be a distant second place
07/07/2011 5:27PM
Jaguars
Mark Brunnel or Jimmy Smith
07/07/2011 5:28PM
St. Louis Rams
Marshall Faulk...we're not including the LA Rams, right?
07/07/2011 6:09PM

rams should be Isaac Bruce
07/07/2011 6:10PM

07/07/2011 6:19PM
Rams....
Kurt Warner gets my vote!!!
07/07/2011 6:28PM
Minnesota Vikings.........
easy one. Gary Anderson. Guy was absolutely automatic. In 1998 he went 35 of 35 on field goals. Didn't miss an extra point either. Not sure how he did in the playoffs. I'll have to look that one up. I know they played Atlanta in the Championship game.......whoops........never mind........
07/07/2011 6:36PM

Pete Weber
07/07/2011 6:44PM
Vikings
John Randle
07/07/2011 6:45PM
Colts
Drew Hadad
07/07/2011 6:48PM
say what?
How can you not have Warren Moon for the Titans/Oilers. And no Montana for the 49ers. For a sports talk show, you guys dont know ur bungholes from a hole in the ground.
07/07/2011 6:55PM
Pay attention/Jim Brown
I guess people can't read or refuse to. The reason Jim Brown wasn't selected for this was because they stated that they limited it to the Super Bowl era. Jim Brown retired a year before the first Super Bowl. DUH!
07/07/2011 6:55PM
Dolphins
Ray Finkle.
07/07/2011 6:57PM
Bruuuuuuuuce
The all-time leader in sacks. Kelly is not in the top 5 of QBs all-time and maybe not even in the top 10. Bruce Smith is the best or second best DE ever and has the most sacks ever.
07/07/2011 7:00PM
49ers
Joe Montana. He's making a comeback with his Sketchers Shape Ups. It is easily Montana.
07/07/2011 7:05PM
49ers
Joe Montana. Dude he's working on a comeback. Shape Ups baby. Shape Ups
07/07/2011 7:08PM
re:Air McNair
You can put him over Warren Moon
07/07/2011 7:16PM
Tough Calls
All in all, not a bad job surprisingly! A few alternates:
Jim Brown - Browns
Marshall Faulk - Rams
As much as I hate him - Deion Sanders - Falcons
07/07/2011 7:17PM
Corrections
QUintessential players:
Cleveland Jim Brown who else?
San Diego John Hadl
Washington Joe Theisman
Oakland Ken Stabler
Buffalo Bills OJ SImpson
Green Bay Bart Starr
Rams Deacon Jones or the guy who looks like Hoss Cartwright and played on little house, that big white tackle guy.
I probably would have gone with Montana--who's more valuable Montana or Rice?

Oh and Earl Campbell TItans/Houston oilers
07/07/2011 7:24PM

How the best qb in franchise history and superbowl champion, drew brees is not the best player ever for the saints is beyond me also just because joe namath got lucky and called his shot doesn't make him their best player ever. in my opinion markgasteneau would be a better choice
07/07/2011 7:34PM
what about the Juice and Brown
O.J Buffalo, Brown- Browns, Tarkenton- Vikes
07/07/2011 7:39PM
Jim Brown
Why is it that people keep saying Jim Brown. He retired in 1965. Superbowl era players. First Superbowl was in '67. Other than the Raiders pick, I agree. I would have to go with Stabler or Biletnikoff.

07/07/2011 9:45PM
Alan Page
Page, not Paige. nonetheless, a pretty solid list. I might replace Emmitt Smith for Staubach but that's a little nit-picky. Both were great.
07/07/2011 9:47PM
Kansas City
It's gotta be derrick thomas. also, if you're going to give the rams Warner, I think serious consideration should be given to drew brees in NO. he's been top 3 in the league for every year he has been a saint, and turned a terrible teamto a superbowl winner in a few short years. if he plays 3 more years, there will be no doubt.
07/07/2011 9:49PM
lazy radio host
What's next, if this show covered basketball it would be a debate about who is the second best ever next to Jordan? What other kind of easy brainless topics can be brought up that are evidence of the hosts lack of preparation or any effort really? He just picks an easy topic that entices callers so that he can take phone calls the entire time. What about the topic "What's your favorite food?" "What are the coolest uniforms?"

Amazing
Sometimes reading some of these comments and listening to the whiner line (though good for a laugh) makes me realize why we are such a joke to other parts of the country. The saying that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover is soooo wrong. Drivearound the city and people watch. The next morning you will be trying to match whiner line calls up with the faces you've seen.

Russ Grimm?? Who is that?
When is Bulldog coming back from vacation??? We need a voice of reason.
07/08/2011 4:25AM
make an exception for Jim brown
How can anyone not mention Jim brown as the best brown's player ever. Though not a 'super bowl era' player, he has to be the only one you can mention here. Ozzie newsome??.....give me a break,,,
07/08/2011 6:13AM

Gonzo!!! I would say Derrick Thomas if he would have sacked Krieg on the last play of that 7 day sack performance. Didn't he have him by the ankles on that play and Krieg threw the winning TD? come to think of it...maybe Krieg for Seahawks just for winning that game.
07/08/2011 7:41AM
lol Jim Brown is not Super Bowl Era
But by all means keep saying it, and when you people can join the 2nd grade reading level, have a real comment to share.
07/08/2011 7:51AM
Not Jim Kelly
I have a hard time putting Kelly as the all-time Bill. He was terrible in the Superbowls when we needed him the most and he isn't helping with the "i am trying to buy the Bills but so far no luck" . Also, Jim Kelly didn't take us to our second Superbowl or give us the greatest comeback ever, it was Frank Reich!

more teams
I think you need to include Houston Oilers, Los Angeles Rams as separate from Tennessee and St. Louis respectively. If so, for Houston it has to be Moon, although I'd like it to be Earl Campbell. For rams I'd go Jack Youngblood.
07/08/2011 8:38AM
Atlanta
Andre Rison
07/08/2011 9:04AM
Joe Namath
Thank you for not downgrading Joe Namath like so many of today's sports "journalists" try to do. You really had to watch Namath play in a full game to realize he was one of the all-time great QBs. This is a QB who played on two legs that were barely functional. He also played when defensive linemen were allowed to get away with a lot more than they do now. Namath's offensive lines weren't always the best either. Lastly, defensive backs were allowed to have contact with receivers unabated until the ball was released by the QB. You put Namath on a team with better personnel and two good legs, and he had a chance to be the best ever.
07/08/2011 9:31AM
Vikings Fran and San Fran Joe
As a vikings fan ...Fran in a cakewalk, one of the best quarterbacks ever in the league, innovative, 3 superbowl appearances broke the mold, Vikings haven't made to the big show since.
And Joe, the best QB in the league ever.. a no brainer.

I like it but...
Title says it all. A few players I would argue for replacing Green Bay - Bart Starr - love Favre but when I think of the Pack I think Lombardi and StarrBills - Kelly certainly has a strong argument but I would take Bruce and even O.J. over him.Falcons - Prime Time, shouldn't even be an arguement here.A suggestion for a future show feature that falls along the lines of this one and I think would be a fun topic - How about an all time city player. For example what player would best represents a city. Say Buffalo would it be Kelly, Hasek, Perrealt, Thurman ect. Would love to hear some debate on that one.Keep up the good work fellas. love the show!
07/08/2011 10:34AM
Cowboys
Emmitt Smith-All time leading rusher, most carries ever, and most rushing touchdowns
07/08/2011 10:46AM

However, no way Kurt Warner gets the Rams all-time player. How about Deacon Jones, Merlin Olsen or Marshall Faulk???

Browns, Cowboys, Cards
Browns-Jim Brown (without a question)
Cardinals-Larry Wilson
Cowboys-Emmit Smith
Besides that I think you guys got the rest of it right. I had a tough time choosing between Kelly, Smith, and OJ, but I think when it comes down to it people will always think of Jim Kelly as the quintessential Buffalo Bill.

Cowboys
Pac-Man Jones

Larry Fitzgerald??
Dan Dierdorf??
07/08/2011 11:32AM
The question of Jim Brown
Jim Brown is obviously the greatest Brown ever, but this list was restricted to super bowl era players only, which is reasonable since very few of us listeners remember the pre-superbowl era. In the super bowl era, Ozzie Newsome was the greatest Brown hands down.
07/08/2011 11:34AM
Jim Brown
Was obviously the greatest player in Browns history. But the list is restricted to SUPERBOWL ERA PLAYERS only, so he doesn't qualify.
07/08/2011 12:00PM
Atlanta Falcons
Picking Michael Vick as the best-ever Falcon is liking Darth Vader the best-ever Jedi; it can't be done. Try Jessie Tuggle, who was a 5-time Pro Bowler and a 3-time All-Pro in 13 seasons in Atlanta. By contrast, Vick was a 4-time Pro Bowler, nothing else. And he never held up as the face of the franchise. Deion Sanders had a brighter 5-year career in Atlanta than Vick did in 6, which further invalidates Vick as the best Falcon of all time.
07/08/2011 12:03PM
Jim Kelly over rated
The dude had 4 chances but he could nevr win the big game...he probably still has nightmares about that one.
Bruce Smith all the way!
As for Dallas - it's gotta be Troy Aikman...he actually led his team to multiple titles.
Lastly - do NOT add Jim Brown unless you are illiterate...he never played in teh Superbowl era people!!!
07/08/2011 12:08PM
Without Qb
You should do the same list but exclude Qb's. Running backs should not make the list ever as they are the most useless dime a dozen position in the nfl.
07/08/2011 12:13PM
chargers
it's Tomlinson or Fouts
07/08/2011 12:41PM
Rams
When I think of the Rams, I think of Eric Dickerson and Deacon Jones. I can see Faulk being in the mix, too, but man, it's hard to top those two guys.

Against your wishes Mike ? I assume you were voting for Montana ? While I believe Rice is the best player to ever play in the NFL i feel like the greatest 49er is Montana
07/08/2011 2:23PM
Atlanta Falcons
This pick definitely has to be Deion Sanders. He is one of the greatest players of all time. He created his alter-ego prime time and make football exciting. He was one of most feared cover corners in football history with olympic speed. A cornerback that actually had hands, was a two way player in the NFL and a dual sport athlete.
07/08/2011 3:11PM
Arizona
Pat Tillman
07/08/2011 4:08PM

Jim Brown, Jim Brown, Jim Brown, Jim Brown, Jim Brown, Jim Brown
07/08/2011 4:42PM
Changes
Tampa Bay - Lee Roy Selmon, St Louis Rams - Isaac Bruce, Oakland - Dave Casper, New Orleans - Archie Manning, Green Bay - Bart Starr or Vince Lombardi, Cleveland - Jim Brown (He has the name of the franchise...it has to be him), Atlanta - Can't be Vick! Could go with Steve Bartkowski. For guys like Kurt Warner and Michael Vick, they had/have success with other teams so that eliminates them.
07/08/2011 6:05PM
Cleveland
Jim Brown then Bernie Kosar?? Try Otto Grahame numbskull.

Buffalo BIlls....
Mike,
I really enjoy your columns and opinions...I would love to sit out debating with you...I think I could hold my own easily. But as far as the Bills are concerned, there are only three possibilities, and I LOVE Kelly. But, it's got to be ranked with all-time stats, and the only three close are Bruce Smith (ALL-TIME #1 and arguably our greatest player ever), Andre Reed (Retired top 3 in most categories at the time), or Thurman based on longevity, numbers and the MVP win. Bruce Smith is our greatest accomplishment followed by the other two, and it's a shame on the Bills that they even allow Evans to wear that number and that they haven't immediately retired Bruce's

I think Emmitt Smith must be considered. After all, he is the all time leading rusher in the NFL and won more championships than Roger. He seems to always get the shaft despite putting up great numbers and playing hard every down- including when he was hurt. The NY Giant playoff comes to mind whenever I think of Emmitt.
07/11/2011 2:59PM
Browns
You're kidding right? Ozzie Newsome over Jim Brown?
