A subject I'll enjoy writing about -- us!

schopp@wgr550.com

We've had this new website for quite a while now, yet I've rarely felt inspired to write. I'm not sure why. I've enjoyed writing in the past, and I love WGR. I even wrote for years as a job before switching to radio.

Last week though while vacationing in the Adirondacks and then Las Vegas, I ended up thinking a lot about sports and the media, particularly radio (naturally). It happened because several times during my trip I was asked my opinions about sports by people who knew my profession, many of them my own friends, and I could almost never answer their questions satisfactorily. For example, Who do I like, the Celtics or the Lakers? (No clue.) What do I think of Rajon Rondo? (Who?) I was told by a Kentucky fan how Stevie Johnson will help the Bills this year. (Uh, OK. Who's Stevie Johnson?)

Not being able to answer these questions -- and I'll never fake the knowledge -- makes me feel varying emotions. Sad, because I used to pride myself on the breadth of my sports knowledge. Good, because of how my interests have branched out. Embarrassed, because how could a sports-talk host not have an opinion about the NBA Finals? (Answer, because I couldn't care less about me-first, plodding, heavy-on-style-and-light-on-substance professional basketball in the current era.) Lonely, because it makes me feel that some of my friends don't even know me. I left many of these conversations on the trips feeling contemplative and conflicted. And when you feel that way, you want to talk to people.

Hi.

I invite listeners to share their impressions on the state of sports media with me. Whereas certain sports topics mean little to me, sports in general and how they are covered to me are of great interest. I offer today's blog entry as a foreword to the subject. In that the summer months are off-seasons for our Bills and Sabres, I feel that the timing for such a direction for this blog is good. And the fact that I'll be writing at all hopefully makes the boss happy.

I hope that enough listeners take interest in my comments to make this endeavor worthwhile. I intend to address the topics that are the most relevant and interesting. Perhaps we'll even address them on the air. It's happened before. Some of my colleagues recently embarked on a discussion about whether WGR and sports-talk radio were too negative, stemming from a Buffalo News commentary on the subject. Without casting judgment on them, I felt my holding that discussion at that time would have given more credibility to the article than it deserved. The article represented an exceptionally shallow viewpoint from a biased writer who has consistently displayed a total lack of understanding of our station's strategies and mission. Further, some of this News commentary has singled me out, and to address any such criticism on the show would to me be a selfish act in that I am merely a co-host. This blog, however, allows for a more personal viewpoint.

I look forward to your remarks.

Mike
