"Whitey's Book Club" Rating System

whitey@wgr550.com

I've been out a few days, but feel like I should do SOMETHING.  So, the book club's first meeting is underway.  I'll be suggesting reading material for all of you, and hope to get the same from you in return.

Let's set a few parameters to start things off.  I plan on categorizing the books i read into THREE major categories.  Forget a "star" system...when you pick up a book you generally have one question:  SHOULD I READ THIS?  Here's how you figure it out.

This is just the master list...the actual reviews will be longer and more in depth.

Moneyballs
I'm naming this category after the Michael Lewis book "Moneyball" because I can't think of a better name for it.  This will refer to REQUIRED READING.  If you're a sports fan...if you're a...whatever.  This category is reserved for the books that simply CAN NOT BE MISSED.  If you don't have time to read them?...take a bus to ANYWHERE and read it on the bus.

Moneyball - Michael Lewis (tracking the finances of a small market baseball team.  Log off now and go buy it)

Flags of our Fathers - James Bradley (Give to any 17 year old that thinks they have "real problems")

Orchard Parks
Ok, so Sundays at the Ralph aren't always great but let's be honest.  Win, lose, or draw, it's pretty much the absolute BEST way to spend any single day of your week.  It's Great.  Books in this category are definitely worth picking up, if you have the time.

Eight Men Out - Eliot Asinof - A good story, and a time when baseball was MUCH different.

The Blind Side - Michael Lewis - The story of left tackles in football, and ONE left tackle above the rest.  Keep an ear out for the name Michael Oher.

Ball Four - Jim Bouton - It's talked about as a revolutionary book, I thought it was good.  In my next life I'm coming back
as  a completely average middle reliever.

The Majors/A Good Walk Spoiled - Its golf.  Feinstein on golf is pretty good.  Feinstein elsewhere is NOT for me.

Into the Wild - Jon Krakauer - VERY cool.  It's a look into just HOW different some people are....and you gain a respect for life in a number of ways.

All-Star Breaks
Simply put, these titles should only be opened the day before and the day after baseball's All Star game.  If you're desperate, I'd say...OK.  Otherwise?  See the rest on the list.

A Shark Never Sleeps - Drew Rosenhaus - I liked the start, good stuff...but it quickly became apparent it's a 200+ page pat  on his own back.  Just couldn't bring myself to continue.

Much more to come...This week I'll be reviewing "The GM" a look inside the life of Ernie Accorsi the year BEFORE the Giants won the Superbowl.  I'll only say this so far...It will make you think the Bills will make the playoffs.  Stay tuned.
